Final Sylas

» Classic Wave (2006)

Reviewed by Olly Perris / Submitted 29-10-06 22:42

Label: Joyride
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Trance

A few of the hardcore Trance heads may already know this one but for those unaware, Classic Wave by Final Sylas first came to the record buyer's attention in 2004 on the now-defunct Alphamagic sub label Jump. It was released towards the end of Alphamagic's long demise and unfortunately didn't reach the crowd it should have done. Joyride label manager Dave Joy has snapped it up for a 2006 re-release and thrown a brand new mix into the bargain.

The Original Mix does however sound incredibly dated now. It lifts you in all the right places and has a melody which still sounds fresh today, however the rest of the production does indeed leave a lot to be desired and when matched with today's standards, just does not hold up. That said, it's a decent crossover track for hard dance jocks looking for something a bit trancier for their sets, and will pack a good punch on a decent system. Marcos serves up the first remix (which appeared on the original 2004 release) but unfortunately it is indeed more of the same, and I'm sure Marcos himself would be the first to admit that he has come on considerably since then.

So it's left to DJ D-Light (aka Simplex D.S.N) to bring this one kicking & screaming into 2006 and he does a fairly good job. With solid beats and tough rhythms, it's a track which packs a hefty kick and will get the feet on the dancefloor moving. However it is let down by an overly elaborate breakdown which contains 2 minutes of strings. Great for home listening, next to useless on the dancefloor. The more technically aware DJ will be able to make a good edit of this, but off vinyl it's just going to bore your dancefloors.

It's a solid release from Joyride but following the dizzy heights of Dusterix 'Dusted' it pales in comparison.
