The Cheshire Catz vs. Black Russian

» Hooked On Hope / Ringshifter

Reviewed by Olly Perris / Submitted 24-09-06 15:50

Label: Fakt Recordings
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Electro House

The Cheshire Catz, aka Dan Gerrett and Jon Blonde, have enjoyed a rapid rise to fame since being voted Mixmag Future Heroes at the end of 2004 and having a number of high-profile bookings throughout 2005. They have been featured in DJ Magazine, The Guardian, Time Out and have had their productions played all over the world by some of the world's biggest DJs. Here, they launch the second release on their Fakt Recordings imprint, this time teaming up with the mysterious Black Russian - a DJ Mag Top 100 DJ & producer who is using this mysterious guise to promote his electro side. First up is Hooked On Hope and this is filthy minimal done to absolute perfection. It's a no-nonsense, bass-driven bastard of a record with a vocal telling a tale about a "lipgloss bitch". Apparantly. Littered with breakdowns, FX noises and enough drops to keep the crowds dancing away, the focus on this record is firmly on getting the feet moving and not relenting from this objective.

The flip sees the boys get busy on the more reserved Ringshifter, a track which Sasha requested the parts for to play in his Ableton Live sets. And with support like that, you won't need me to tell you that this is an absolute monster of a track. Less obvious than the A, the focus on this track is the groove. With minimal bleeps & clicks, solid production and a dynamic structure, this track is just as exciting as it is hypnotic.

A great release for Fakt and the Catz, who should enjoy great success with this record.
