One Function talks to us about his biggest loves and his new album release 'Harmony'

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 20-10-20 09:50

One Function aka Jenia Akerman has been releasing music on the triumphant Iono-Music label for a while. At the end of this month, he launches his new album called 'Harmony' and unleashes some fresh crazy powerful beats to us all! We decided to sit down and find out all about it...

What’s your first memory of music?

It was the track by Robert Miles - called 'Children'. I think this track has all the fundamentals of psy-trance! The melody, the beat, the elements! I still have goosebumps when I hear this track and all the good childhood memories I have come flooding back!

Who are your influences and what inspires you?

I listen to lots of music, mainly electronic. Over the last few years, I really enjoy progressive house and techno artists such as Stefan Bodzin, Artbat and ANNA - they all have a really beautiful unique sound. Of course, psy-trance - which is the soundtrack of my everyday life. I really enjoy the Tel Aviv beaches and love to travel in the nature of Israel. I try to do it often, as it's really revitalising and then the inspiration is endless! I think that’s why I use lots of nature like atmospheric sounds in my music. I think I get my inspiration basically from everything that I hear; it can be a melody or atmosphere in a tv program even (lots of Netflix Smile) or some nice line from a good track. I use lots of different forums for my inspiration and listen to lots of charts and new releases over here to hear what is new and fresh. I think it's important to always be up to date - as electronic music develops and changes so fast.

When did you first discover the joy of festivals?

It was in 2005 - the RAVEOLUTION festival at Nitzanim beach in Israel. We were there for 2 days without sleeping - just dancing! No tent, no phone; only music, nature and beautiful people. I got truly inspired by the pureness and the connection to the music from the people and myself. This magnificent thing that is created when all the people dance together to one unified beat, the emotional breaks and the joy and power that comes after the kick drops! I think it's one of the most beautiful things you can ever experience.

You studied at the BPM school, tell us about this...

I was there from a very young age as I already knew this was what I wanted to do. I studied for 2 years right after I finished high school. I was already producing but I wanted to bring it to another level up - bring my skills to a more professional level. I learnt a lot, and I had a really nice time there with the students and the amazing teachers. I think we are very lucky in Israel to have this kind of school.

You’re also a family man. Did becoming a father change you as a person?

I'm thankful to have a beautiful 2-year-old little girl named Mia. It was the only thing that was missing in my life - and we dreamt about it for ages. She brings so much happiness to our lives and sure I'm much more relaxed and patient now I have her and also much much happier!

How do you balance family and artist life?

The number one rule is that family comes before everything. My family is the most important thing in my life and it has a big part in my music career. I'm super lucky to have a very supportive wife who is also my best friend. It makes it much easier when you know the ones you care about support you for so many years and help you to accomplish your dream. I really enjoy producing at night, so it helps the balance with the studio time and the time I spend with the family. I think the hardest part is when I'm gone for tours and gigs at the weekend. I always try to make it as fast as I can so I can get back to my wonderful family.

How have you been coping with the current Covid-19 situation?

It's hard, I really miss the dance floor and all my friends around the globe. The lockdowns and the restrictions are really crazy and something that I didn’t think we'd ever experience. It's much harder to write music these days. I think the hardest part of this virus is the uncertainty of when it will end. The last few years I've been running nonstop, there were months that I wasn't home for many days, but since Covid started I have spent much more time with my daughter and wife. I think this is the most positive thing about this virus. I'm thankful for the time I get with my family and I feel super lucky to see my girl grow and just to spend the time with her. I really hope we all can dance soon again in ONE HARMONY!

You have an album out soon on Iono-Music. Tell us about it... What did you use to make it, favourite tracks, is there a specific vibe to it?

I started producing this album 2 years ago while I was in the middle of touring many gigs and festivals around the globe. I felt really inspired by it and I spent the last one and a half years producing and polishing it. I was totally in festival/party mood, morning dance floor vibes etc. The plan was to release it at the beginning of this year, just before the big Summer festival season, but unfortunately, the virus hit just before.

My favourite tracks are 'Horizon' which is a collaboration track I made with Hinap. I really enjoy producing with him as he is really a professional dude that pays attention to the very small things when working. We seem to have the same way of thinking; we had a really great vibe working on this track.

My second favourite is 'Encore'. The track starts at 120 bpm and ends at 138 bpm. I try to mix or use elements from all the psy-trance sub genres. Hopefully people will dig it and the whole album too!

It was a big decision to release this album during the pandemic as there are no shows, almost no festivals, and no parties at the moment in most parts of the world. But we decided to just let it go and let people enjoy new music in this stressful period of time. Hopefully people will like it and it will make their time in lockdown better.

Other than family and music, what are your biggest loves?

I love nature, I love food and I really enjoy cooking for my family and friends. Chocolate in big amounts and special 'herb' (not necessarily in this order) Smile

Do you think you are born with artistic talent or can it be taught?

I think it's something that has to be part of you already; otherwise, it won't last long.
