Exploring SUN! Ahead of her debut album release on Iono-Music!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 25-03-20 09:34

Georgia Moschopoulou aka 'SUN' is a progressive trance/psy-trance project from Greece; who has been making deep, atmospheric, progressive psy-trance music with sweet blue melodies to 'burn your feelings out' since 2014! Now recently singed to the iconic Iono-Music label; we decided an interview with Georgia was well overdue - ahead of her epic debut album release 'Sonic Therapy' on the 27th March 2020!

Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up and what influence did this have on you as a person and as an artist?

I was born and raised in a small quiet place in the city of Piraeus with my 4-member family. I had the usual childhood with friends in the neighbourhood, school and music lessons. As a kid, I had all the love of my family and I was fully supported for my choices in life. The first years in life are very definitive to a person’ s character and psychology. After I finished music production studies, I moved into my own home in the centre of Piraeus. All of these normal things gave me a simple mind - to just follow what I love, fight for it and to create for myself the opportunities to get it all.

When did you experience your first taste of music? What did this mean to you?

During my drumming lessons, I got involved in a dark electro band as a drummer and producer. This was my first official work as a producer. We released two albums on a German label. At the same time, I was experimenting with downbeats, chill-out, ambient and progressive house tunes. These first productions of mine seemed to be the substructure to my final signature sound.

What led you to the call of Progressive Psy-trance?

First of all, I would like to say that I had no particular direct impact or event that led me to this sound. I was living in Thessaloniki when I met Tassos. We were staying in the same building and he was the promoter of the biggest psy-trance parties in town. After a long time we became friends and he was the first to hear my productions. He convinced me to play my music for the first time at a festival he was promoting. It all started there...

When did you first decide you wanted to be an artist? Talk us through your journey of then to where you are now.

In general I am a person who does not force things to happen; I just go with the flow. So years ago I actually realised that I spend most of my time producing. This became my priority in life and the only thing that really completes me. I put all the other things on the side and I focused on what makes me grow and feel alive. Now I feel blessed that all my efforts and sacrifices are coming back to me in the best possible way. Releasing my music on such a respected and great label, and it being handled with care and love; and playing out - making people have fun - is the best reward I can take.

You have an upcoming album called 'Sonic Therapy' due for release on March 27th on Iono-Music. Describe the album to us and what are the stand out extra special tracks to you and why?

We all know very well that when we experience something for the first time, good or bad, an unknown part of ourselves is coming out. For an artist, their debut album marks the beginning of such a trip. This album is the best work I have done in my life to date; it reflects my essence, my point of view and my experiences. Half of the tracks were produced a few years ago but I reedited them to make them more modern; I just kept the main themes and melodies. The rest were produced in about 3 months. The result is a combination of some old productions and some totally fresh ones. The special tracks for me are “Mind is the limit”, as it really gets me into a real trip with the old school dominating melody. Also “Hidden Secrets” has a very stimulating break, it really makes me want to disappear... In the end I need to say that I just produce music that I like to hear myself.

Who and what are you influenced and inspired by?

I find inspiration in anything; like a beautiful place, a sunset, a strong feeling or even in a bad moment. It is all kept in my subconscious and then the first chance I have, I open an empty project and it all comes out. I respect and I am totally influenced by artists such as: Vibrasphere, Antix, Son kite, Bluetech and Freq. These artists have been very important to me along the way. They are responsible for the whole taste of my sound and arrangement, as they are a standard of high level and of quality work for me.

Do you feel artistry can be taught?

Lovely question. Some people have a gift. To escape reality using their own skills. You know a lot of people are studying music production and technology nowadays. But this is just the first step. The next level is demanding of passion and focus, because the hard part is to find out yourself what you want to do with music. You need to have a dream and a vision and then turn these into sound. So no; I don't think it can be taught. It is all about our dreams and visions, and how compatible they are with reality.

Other than music, what are the great loves in your life?

My greatest love in life is my sister, I can't live without her. We are not so similar personalities but I would do anything for her. Another big love is chocolate and sweets in general (haha). I can't stop gaining energy from this epic taste. I also love my friends and the people I have in my life; I am grateful for having them as they choose to have me in their life too.

Do you follow a set process when making a track? What is your studio set up?

No, I don't want to follow a specific process; every time will be different. I just leave 'it' to lead me to the required point. Actually, my favourite moment is making the melodic part, so usually I start with this when I feel inspired. Then I start to make the 'body' with kicks, basslines, atmospheres and general arrangement. The last part is to dress it up with sounds, leads, arps to give it character and flow. Of course, this part can take a while as I am always adding and removing sounds until I feel it's done. I work with my iMac, my monitors, midi controller and plenty of virtual VSTs for the time being. I feel that as I make progress in the industry, expectations are increased so I will always be updating and upgrading.

What are your hopes for the album release and your dreams for the future?

I must admit that when I started making my own productions, I didn't have in mind that this would become my whole life. I can't see anything else but music, and sometimes this is a problem for the other parts of my daily life. It is not good to be stuck like this with anything, but I cannot go back now. I just want my music to reach as many people as possible and to be played around the world by me and other DJs. I want to live this experience fully and make people who support and believe in me both proud and happy!

Georgia - thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview with me. Love and best wishes to you for the future!
