Land Switcher – The Earth is Moving at Tribal Village

The evolution of the psychedelic music landscape appears like a vision that is constantly in flux, repeatedly melting and reforming to reveal increasingly unique, complex, and colourful forms. These distinct musical apparitions emerge into our reality and entangle themselves into the social, psychological, and spiritual forces that draw us together. They continue the cycle of creativity, artistry and human connection that creates the magic of the psychedelic experience we share.
Hailing from the French music scene and signed to Free-Spirit Records Land Switcher are an exciting new discovery that are set to take the psychedelic scene by storm. With a brand new EP just released, their music seems to reflect that of the artist whose search for originality, creativity and expression precedes any other motivations. Broken acidic grooves dripping in dubby, earthly rhythms submerged in disrupted psychedelia that tune your brain into another dimension.
Thankfully a poetic description of their music isn’t all we have to go on, because Land Switcher are making an appearance at Tribal Village – A Psychedelic Adventure on the 11th of January at Crucifix Lane. Let’s get 2014 on the move with one of London’s most innovative and inviting psychedelic parties!
Who are Land Switcher?
Land Switcher is Freddy Chauvin and Antoine Martineau, friends since a long time ago who decided to create music together. The first story was in 2001 in a dub band in France.
When did your musical interests begin, and how did you get into electronic music?
Musical interests began early for both of us. Antoine was born into a family of musicians and studied jazz music. His first instrument was the drums.
Freddy learned to play the piano then he started to compose music using it. His first approach to electronic music and production was with psy trance and he spent 6 years working on it.
We have listened to electronic music for a long time in a lot of different styles and we have been to a lot of parties and festivals together around the globe. We fell in love with this sound at the same moment so it seemed logical to decide to make our own music.
Where does your inspiration come from to create the psychedelic sound?
The inspiration comes from experiences we had in our own life and from the music we've heard since few years.
Who, or what, are your musical influences?
Well there is always a lot of music around us and in many styles – acoustic, electronic, old or new music.
When we want to be inspired we try to focus on psy trance. It is often forest/Zenonesque for Antoine and full-on for Freddy but also here there is no rules and it depends on the mood.
Our favourite artists are from Enig'matik Records like Quanta, Whitebear and also Birds of Paradise and Gibson. There is too much good music to mention it all!
A lot of your music is described as ‘psybient’, is this label accurate? What are the origins of this emerging psychedelic genre?
Perhaps the word ambient inside psybient is too weak because our music is a bit heavy. Anyway, we always try to make it like this and create blasting tracks.
We like to say dub music and we try to focus on this culture as it is our roots and the stuff we loved since a long time ago. Our music is also ‘glitched’ sometimes because of the techniques we use. It is not that easy to find a name for this type of music and to be honest sometimes we have no idea about which one it could be.
Preview of Land Switcher EP
Why do you think people are attracted to psychedelic music or parties?
Psychedelic music is often really deep and strong – there are a lot of things to hear inside, because of the complexity and the diversity of the sounds. You can have several listens to the same track and there is a different way to understand it each time.
Maybe that's why we are attracted to this – each person can create their own story and feel something peculiar and their own self inside this music. We see the psychedelic movement like something underground and experimental, and this is what we love.
You are appearing in the UK at Tribal Village on the 11th of January, is this your first appearance in the UK, and what have been the highlights of your career as Land Switcher so far?
We have already been to London a couple of times but it will be the first one we will be playing here as Land Switcher. We are looking forward to this one and will be glad to showcase our new EP next to our friends and artists from Free-Spirit Records.
So far, each gig has been an experience and we have had fun everywhere we've played. It's always a pleasure to meet new people and hear new music. Maybe Hadra Festival in France was the biggest stage we've played. Freqs of Nature Festival in Germany was the most crazy. The gig we had and the time we spent in Ukraine was unforgettable because of the people we met there.
Where do you go from here?
We would like to continue making music everyday if possible and keep exploring our imagination and creating new tunes. We need to work again and try to push our music forward as electronic sounds improve. Great collaborations and remixes are also on the way.
We will try to play more often and in the near future it would be fun to plan something outside of Europe. We are thinking about a tour in Oz in 2015 like our friend Quanta is doing at the moment, it looks like there are a lot of festivals and stages to play and also a big movement in this country.
