Magnetix Halloween Ball: Reviewed Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 10-11-09 18:06 With spooky goings on, distant screams carried off into the cold night air and the rattle of chains heavy round necks and arms Halloween in Brixton these days is more bling than anything else. Magnetix are well known for blinging up the 414 on Coldharbour Lane turning it every month into a wonder of decorations and superb music. We sent Agnes Klos undercover, well dressed up at least, to treat herself to some of their tricks. The great thing about the London clubbing scene is that almost each week you can hear the hottest DJs on the planet in every corner of mainstream clubland. But a problem arises when you want to hear proper underground music; the big venues seem to book the same headline DJs time after time. If you are a fan of trance and psychedelic but feel tired of walking for miles, searching for good illegal open-air parties, then Magnetix is surely your kind of thing. It promises to give clubbers something they do not get elsewhere. Trance and psychedelic trance have always been the genres of music which are the closest to my heart. Unfortunately, I have had trouble easily finding this music in London clubs so in the end I compromised and began listening to house, which is easily accessible. I was, therefore, in seventh heaven when I went to Magnetix for the Halloween party. Finally! I thought to myself. Finally, I had found a party with wicked tunes, tunes that I hadn’t heard before. A party with the friendliest crowd and the coolest decoration to please all ravers’ eyes. From the perspective of the venue, Club 414 is an intimate place down Coldharbour Lane in Brixton with heaps of corners to hide in. There are two levels dividing the club into the upstairs sitting area with a smoking space outside and the dancing area and bar downstairs. Once through the main door, you walk straight into the middle of the dancefloor. How cool is that? The dancing space is not huge but that is exactly where the beauty of the club comes from. When everyone joins in the dancing madness the atmosphere becomes truly magnetic. Getting into the spirit of Halloween, the promoters lavished funds on devilish and scary décor. Decking the interior with tarantula spiders walking down the walls, spider webs glued to the door, bats gliding above the bar and skulls hanging around the dancing crowd, all of it added to the special character attracting street zombies in and a monster line-up with them. Two gay guys that I went with told me, before we entered the club, that they wanted to leave in half an hour. They were scared of the intolerance which might have come from the straight crowd in Brixton. To their surprise everyone was so nice, admiring their vampires’ outfits and make-up. After an hour they made new friends and did not want to leave at all. One of them, Ivan from Brazil told me: “Wow! I am pleasantly taken aback with the reaction of people. They shake my hand and are very genuine with no bullshit attitude or looking down on me. The music is one of the best I have heard for years. Master tunes! Let’s shake this dancefloor!” Magentix is famous for welcoming an array of hugely talented DJs who stand out from the crowd. The operational-brains of the party belong to Dean Zone, Phil Lankester and Andy Forse. It is essential to underline the fact that the Magnetix team stays very critical and demanding towards the booked DJs, setting only the highest standards for them. “Believe me; I would have no problem kicking a DJ off if they weren’t playing the music they were booked to play!” Dean told me, “We’re not Nazi’s or anything, we just know what we want, but we book DJs accordingly so we’ve never had a problem, touch wood!” The party kicked off with Phil Lankester warming up the crowd. Phil who is also known under the Libra 9 name has developed and perfected his sound from trance to hard dance with the recent focus on psy trance. He performs regularly at his own night Puzzle Project but he didn’t disappoint the crowd at Magnetix with pumping dirty tracks that couldn’t have pleased the hungry clubbers more. At midnight Andy Force took over the decks to an excited, gradually growing crowd. Andy, the HF Up and Coming DJ of the year 2008, has been DJing for only two years but has already made his mark on the London scene. His set at Magnetix contained a nice blend of psy trance and progressive psy trance, setting up the club nicely for DJ Moon who was celebrating her birthday weekend. “Happy Birthday Beautiful!” DJ Moon is one of the hotties among psy trance artists and I don’t mean that only in the physical terms. This multitalented Mexican DJ aka Diane Fernandez has some real skill behind the decks. Her set was driven by an underlying techno note but it still kept a trance sound. In her interview prior to the event she said: “I think no-one has a better job in the world than a DJ!” She also added when asked about her style: “I think the sound of Moon is always for dancing, for having a good time, for having a party and for trying to entertain the people. It’s not deep, it’s for sexy time, for party time! It’s party music and sometimes can be really psychedelic but I never forget that it’s a party.” Afterwards Timmy Whiz heated up the club for all witches, wizards, vampire girls and Scream-mask wearing guys. Just in time to prepare us for one and a half hours of hard dance served by DJs MDA & Spherical who just two weeks earlier smashed it on the main stage of Hard House Academy. It was the first chance these guys had to play tracks from their newly finished Tidy EP in their final versions and the audience took to it well. The last beats of the party belonged to TrickyDJ playing back to back with Dean Zone. And all I can say is wow, what an amazing night! Through the music it was clearly visible that the promoters had carefully planned in advance the whole build-up during the party, step by step preparing us for the stronger beats of each successive set. ‘All forms of trance music from progressive to psy to hard’ – this simple motto captures the essence of Magnetix. It is worth knowing that Magnetix is not a regular monthly party, it happens three to four times per year, slowly building up a crowd of genuine followers who know what to expect and are on the lookout for the next date. That is probably one of the factors which can be attributed to the success of this party. So don’t miss out the next one. Hopefully it will be even more crowded than the last one.
