Dean Holley gives you the lowdown on Tribal Dance

Reported by Macey / Submitted 16-03-09 12:00

Anyone who has been a party goer down Brixton way over the past five years may well have had the pleasure to have enjoyed one of DJ Kito’s sets. In fact, quite possibly this may well have also occurred at one of his parties as Kito (Dean Holley) was the driving force behind the popular underground promotion Carnage, which over recent years frequented a host of venues around South London and late last year celebrated it’s 5th Birthday in style, it was also that promotion’s last party.

It came as quite a shock to all, when Dean announced that the birthday party would also be the last for the Carnage brand. As Dean was so involved with the London underground party scene it comes as little surprise that he is back with a new promotion and a different concept.

Tribal Dance – The Awakening is the first of what should be many parties for this new promotion. It takes place Saturday 21st March at The Medusa Club in Brixton. I caught up with Kito for an interview to find out more.

Howzit mate?
It came as a shock to me and I’m sure many others would have felt similarly when you chose to finish the Carnage parties. The parties were still well attended and had a good vibe. So can you tell us your reasons for that decision?

Carnage was a party which influenced many others; the vibe was all about having fun and being free. I loved the togetherness that Carnage created, but a few years in I started disliking the name as it’s not a word that naturally expresses positivity. I think it was when some terrorist attack had happened and the word carnage was written all over the papers that I started thinking towards a new beginning.

So you put an end to the carnage, so to speak. You’ve got quite a profile these days and you are playing all over town. As we both know, the promoting is very demanding time wise, so I thought you might be calling it quits to concentrate more on your DJing. Club promoters seem to be a dying breed having had their numbers culled over the past few years by the evolving scene.

The same however can not be said of DJs, as the supply of gigs has lessened more and more have taken on the craft and are keen to play to crowds in a party environment. So I was stoked when you recently contacted me to let me know of your new project Tribal Dance. Can you tell us about the concept you’re adopting that’s helping 40 DJs to have a gig this Saturday night?

Tribal Dance is about a crew of DJs working together to give you something special. I wanted to have people involved who were promoters as well as DJs. People who care more about the party and the party scene as much as whether or not they played a good set. By bringing these sorts of people together, as well as having amazing music you’ll have an amazing party.

So what is it you’re looking to create, or rather what’s the direction of this posse of DJs and where do you see it being in 12 months time?

We’re creating a fantasy place where people can be free. With The Medusa, you’ve got four different spaces to play around with in sound and design. After going to some amazing squat parties and seeing how they transform a space I thought I’d love to bring that back into the clubs.

In terms of direction of the party, we’re looking to unite people in music. We’re looking to grow as a tribe and are looking forward to celebrating the end of the year with a massive New Years Eve party at The Medusa. Above all we’re looking to spread the love.

So we are going to be experiencing the first party this weekend. What have you got in store for us music wise? I know that you kit up the cloak room at the Medusa for a fourth room, which makes for some bangin beats in the toilets next door that’s for sure.

I was wary about trying to use the fourth room as for me it was the cloakroom too, but after Oneness I realized that people enjoyed having more options musically. It’s like a playground where people can wander around and pick and choose the music, but with an underground party vibe. In each room I put music I really enjoy – so for this one we’ve got hard dance in the main room, techno in the cloakroom, psy trance upstairs and chilled beats in the bar. For the next party we may try to use the toilets for some hardcore gabba.

And as the nature of the collective experience is all about the experience, you don’t want anybody to miss out on this first experience. So why don’t you tell us how prospective punters can get into Tribal Dance for FREE this Saturday?!

For the first party we’re letting anyone in free with a pass, guest list or if you know the secret passwords (shh… it’s “Pigeons and Penguins”)! We basically want to give everyone the chance to come down and experience what we have to offer. If you went to Carnage, then think Carnage with the input of 40 minds working together. If you didn’t, then here’s your chance to experience that and something more!

Is the collective complete or are you looking for others to get involved?

As a promoter as well as being happy with what you’ve got you’re constantly evolving and moving. I remember with Carnage I got the group together and then would go out and see another amazing DJ and think I’d love to get them involved. Tribal Dance is all about working together in a community of dance. If anyone feels they’ve got a passion for the dance scene and would like to get involved then email me at Tribaldance@hotmail.co.uk.

So there you have it groovers, something for everyone. An open invitation to a wicked party for all, and if you’re looking for a creative outlet here’s an opportunity to get involved in something that might be worth telling your grand kids about.

Spot ya on the dancefloor!!
