Riot! memories as hard dance returns to The End

It's been a good couple of years since hard dance last graced The End, the mighty Central London superclub that has played host to some of the coolest DJs and parties in electronic music. Indeed Riot! used to be widely recognised as one of the best parties at the venue – regularly rocking Sunday afternoons with its mix of hard house, techno, hard trance and hardstlye, with house and electro in the lounge (where big names like King Roc and Tom Neville cut their teeth). It was a sad day when it was decided that Riot! would be no longer but all corners of the scene welcomed with open arms the news that Frantic and Twist would be teaming up for an Easter Sunday special, Hard Nation at this most special of venues.
The sociable, relaxed vibe of Riot! was something that too many hard events these days are missing (the lounge area of The End was something that definitely facilitated that vibe). Hard Nation will see Riot! promoter and residents, BK and Ed Real back in their natural environment, alongside other big guns like Justin Bourne, Karim, Cally Gage and Technikal. Of course this event's sure to bring back some great memories for anyone who graced the Riot! parties and will help those who weren't there to understand why it was such a special, unique party for the hard dance scene. We got HF members and industry types to recount their fondest moments from Riot!'s rather debauched history.
Before I even got into the promoting side I would drag about 20 of my clubbing mates (that I had met the night before, hehe) down to this afternoon session at The End. I went to the very first one and was there every week (yes it was weekly at first). We had our very own special corner and it was a delight to see the place gain in popularity each week. I remember taking someone for their first ever clubbing experience to Riot! - full on baby, nothing like throwing them in at the deep end eh! He turned up in his best Sunday outfit, I kid you not - he thought you went clubbing in proper shirt and trousers etc. He said he could not dance, I told him to just watch what everyone else was doing. After about 30 minutes he'd got the hang of it. Next minute I turn around and said “Who is that hanging off BK's shoulders in the DJ box?”....you guessed it, it was him! I have loads of great memories from Riot! at the end. It was great to be involved and play there regularly. I always had such a great time playing. The crowd were always up for it and it was always a pleasure to play. Even when I wasn't playing I used to go down because it was such a great party. I also had loads of fun dancing around in the house room to Tom Neville and the rest of the guys. It was our favourite club for a long time. No particular memories that I can share with the world for legal/moral reasons, but definitely worth a mention is the fact I learnt that no hard dance DJ or promoter can actually dance….ha ha! – Gordon Darley
We were regulars and went with a gang to celebrate a girl friends birthday. She got to the front of the queue and the bouncer found something she shouldn't have had in her pocket. Got given them back though but had to leave and we went in without her. About an hour later she had driven home, changed put on a hat and got back into the club! Top work. I got called by the bouncers one night and told my motorbike had been ticketed! Went out wearing lycra hotpants as usual - saw the ticket and rather than spoil my mood decided to leave it till later to read it. I therefore got on the bike (1500cc Gold Wing) in hotpants and drove it round the corner and parked it in a parking bay - got back to find the bouncer responsible and friends feeling somewhat guilty - had I read the ticket it said "Ha ha got you!!" The bouncers had tried to call out and tell me it was a joke but I’d got on the bike and gone! They did feel guilty - I'm a little worried that I actually drove the bike wearing the shorts - I think it was a little conspicuous. Riot! was the best club - its disappearance was mourned by so many of us. – Brett (Riff and Raff)
I can't really remember any particular stories to be honest. Just more how it was a great place to meet people in the industry after a long weekend of clubbing. And there was a more laid back and chilled feel to it, as it was an event where you could either get back on it, or just wind down with your mates – Jason Blayde
Back in it’s heydey Riot was like a kind of Misdemeanors (Lottie's thing at AKA) but on a Sunday. You could bump into anyone from the music industry down there, drinking, dancing or whatever. Such a great way to spend Sunday afternoon/evening and sorely missed. – Jonathan Get-In PR
One very fond memory was having a guess the job or silliest dance competition. I rowed out into the middle of the dancefloor and started fishing in time with the beat. Very glad BK & Farley Accelerate didn’t come one. A close second was the fish dance. That what was great about Riot! Who can forget the first time Ed Real played One Night In Hackney. As the vocal crossed the dancefloor it felt like 1000 people all stopped doing what they were doing at once and stared at the speakers! Almost like a dancefloor equivalent of the 'Where were you when Kennedy was shot?' Everyone who was there, I’m sure, will remember the earthshaking impact of this glorious tune. It rocked hard, much like Riot!, and this very tune is still turning heads 5 years later! 15 cans of Stella! Ha ha...who can say what groundbreaking tunes Ed or BK will play at Hard Nation on Easter Sunday? – Will Paterson (Frantic)

Good old times were definitely had at riot, I personally enjoyed being resident for over three years when it was rocking each and every month. I wont be able to make this Sunday but I know it is going to be massive and I wish Steve, Will the DJs and most importantly the clubbers a wicked night, time to crank up the thunderidge! Watch out how loud it can go when BK steps up!!

Some very hazy memories of Riot! circa 2001-2002! One of my fondest clubbing memories in London was @ Riot! on a Notting Hill Carnival weekend when a bunch of bongo players came in during Ted's set. As they finished, Ted dropped CJ Bolland's The Prophet" - wiiiiicked!

Riot! was such a great party - I used to go practically every week when it was pretty much 'the highlight' of the Hard Dance caneage - no matter what event people had been to earlier in the weekend, it was all about Provocation in the morning then on to Riot! afterwards where everyone would compare notes about which was the best event so far that weekend. There was always a great mix of new faces and friendly regulars, so after about 2 or 3 visits it was the kind of party you could go to on your own and still feel like you were amongst friends.
I guess in some ways the popularity of internet forums killed the big social get-together at the end of the weekend - it seems nowadays most people would rather post on a thread to talk about the party they've just been to rather than head down to an end-of-weekend meetup, but I suppose that's just the evolution of things.
Riot! was all about the second room for me, tough house and Electro. It was the winning combination of great tunes (I remember hearing 'The Push' by Plump DJs out for the first time there) and associated hedonism that went a long way towards inspiring me to DJ and also to start NORQ! as a Sunday party - as far as I was concerned the vibes on a Sunday, the slightly naughty feel of 'avin it at the same time most normal people would be mowing the lawn or tucking into a roast was just the best.
Glad to see the Riot! crew still keeping the vibe alive. We salute you!
