Go off on another direction with Ed Tangent Reported by Psylicious / Submitted 06-02-08 11:10 Ed Tangent is one of the UK’s most experienced and talented DJs within the psy trance scene. Helping to build the genres foundations within the UK and at its forefront for over two decades, his is a feat seldom matched in this country. To hear compliments such as, ‘It’s an honour to have Ed play for us’, by party promoters in the UK and around the World simply cements what Ed Tangent is all about! Quality Psychedelia! His name has appeared on stages nationally with countless events and festivals, including running the dance tent at some, providing his legendary Sunrise stage! Now part of the Psylicious Collective and Phantasm Records stables, get ready to hear the Ed Tangent name even more! Tom Psylicious found out a bit more about Ed, his involvement over the years within the UK’s psy scene and his unique ‘Speaker Surfing’ antics. This is Ed Tangent! Ed many thanks for you time answering just a few questions on your historic and dare I say it, psychedelic career. I expect you are glad to be able to relax a little at this time of year and re-charge for the year ahead? I remember playing in Amsterdam a few years ago and was billed as a ‘Veteran’ on the flyer, which was a bit of a shock as I was only in my early thirties. The promoter said he put it on because I’ve been around for quite a while. I would count myself as part of the ‘second wave’ of psy DJs. Many of the ‘first wave’ DJs’, artists who brought us the original Goa sound are no longer about or doing psy trance. As for chilling as much as I can (it is a favourite pastime for me); I’ve had some time to check out music and lay down some new mixes. You have been DJing for over 20 years and can be considered one of the most experienced DJs in the UK. What was it that first got you into DJing? I can remember always having a fascination with the art of DJing. I remember seeing a documentary when I was very young about the disco scene and seeing the DJ using decks as a musical tool. Later on in the early eighties I started messing with pitch adjustable turntables (And a GLI mixer, anyone remember them?) as I was into early electro, breaks and beats. Much later on at university at the start of the 90s’ friends of mine put on parties (house, hardcore and trance) and I started playing out with them. The rest as they say is history! You’re one of the earliest psychedelic trance DJs in the UK, certainly a known player, as well as helping to build a solid foundation for the scene. What led to your involvement in the psy / Goa trance music and converted you to DJing this style? I was playing a mixture of techno and acid until I met up with Christos (H20 Records) who was spinning pure Goa and never looked back. Together with him and Matt Allaby (Nano Records) we set up Global Sunrise in Manchester. I also hooked up with the Return To The Source crew who were one of the original psy / Goa nights with residents Mark Allan, Tim Healey, Tsutoshi, Chrisbo and Baraka and played for them at various venues in London like The Rocket, Brixton Academy and Cloud Nine. So, describe the infamous Ed Tangent sound that has made you the leading North of England psy trance DJ? A title richly deserved. I can only say one word on this….Quality. You've played around Europe, including a tour of Greece with Medicine Drum and also played YK2 at Hill Top in Goa, what has been your most memorable event? My most memorable party was playing with Return To The Source at the Mega Dog beach festival in Cornwall. The festival was blessed with blue skies all week end and was located right on the beach. The final night R.T.T.S. put an all night party on the beach with the help of Tipi’s Unlimited. Mark Allen and Tim Healey played up to sunrise then I played a 3 hour set with the sun rising in a clear blue sky. It was not supposed to be quite that long but one of the other DJs had overdone the liquid drops and mislaid his records! What is it you like best about the psy trance culture? I think it was summed up by a newly converted person who could not believe how friendly everyone in the club was. They said, ‘There is no one looking moody and wearing sunglasses. I can just be myself and no-one minds.’ Freedom to be free, dance like no one is looking. Which DJs and producers are cutting the Tangent mustard with you at the moment? I love the new stuff by Reality Grid, very techy and groovy psy trance. But there is so much good stuff out there, you have to get past all the dross as well. As for DJs, I always have to give a big up to my good friend Dick Trevor (A.M.D, Green Nuns), a fellow Phantasm DJ who has been around longer than me yet still cuts the mustard every time he performs. Oh and Eat Static still do it live for me every time and span so many different styles. Re-capping over the past year what have been your thoughts on the psy scene and its host of parties and festivals? What was your highlight in 2007? We have seen a rise of new festivals in the UK over the past few years putting psy trance firmly on the map. I enjoyed every festival I played last year and was given great time slots at everyone, so I would not want to really judge one over the other but performance wise finishing the Tribe Of Frog / Waveform stage at Sunrise celebration was great and speaker surfing at the Waveform festival was a laugh. What is this ‘speaker surfing’? Is this some kind of new activity taken up by you?? Meet me and you will think that I am quite reserved (I am) but once in front of pair of decks I like to go a little wild. I like to put on a bit of a show and interact with the crowd by jumping around like a loon and shouting! Give me a stack of speakers I will surf them baby! Your now on board with the The Psylicious Collective, how did this transpire for you and what made you look at the collective? I bumped into Tom (Earth Angel) over the internet and as it turned out we had mutual friends and a love of the same music. I was looking for someone to handle my bookings as it is one aspect of the industry I do not enjoy (I don’t enjoy pushing paper, I enjoy pushing sounds systems loud!). It is also good as we don’t live to far away from each other so meeting up is not a problem. You have many great people behind you including the mighty Phantasm Record Label based in the UK, owned by John Phantasm (Eskimo’s Dad if you didn’t know). You are now also a DJ for the label. You guys go back quite a few years, how did this come about? I met John through Return To The Source, we both played with them and over the years we’ve played many parties together. John is a true pro and has done so much for the scene. He has always supported me so when he made me a Phantasm DJ I was really pleased. There is no stopping the Tangent whatsoever! You have also teamed up with the infamous Live act Eat Static. This just amplifies what you are about in the world of underground cutting edge psychedelic trance music! Tell us more about this Ed? Last summer I ended up playing alongside Merv and Joie at quite a few festivals. This was such a great experience as Eat Static helped me get into dance music in the first place. I got to know them a bit better over the summer and they are great guys. They have given me encouragement and support for what I do, when you get an act like Eat Static saying they rate your work it is a bit of a boost. So the year ahead is already underway, with gigs lined up in Holland, Portugal, Germany, South Africa and Canada as well as the UK and yes, those wonderful festivals. But in all honesty apart from the fact that there is a lot going on, what are your thoughts on the forthcoming year? After building a good profile in the nineties things tailed off a bit when my children arrived. I got a proper job and settled into family life, although I still was quite busy in the North of the UK. But now they are not babies anymore and demand from around the world is rising, I am looking to take on more bookings. I am really pleased to be finally getting more recognition for my work and I am all set to develop an international career. Away from all things psy, what do you enjoy doing most? I am a family man. It’s got to be my number one priority. But the great thing is my children know what I do and go to some of the family friendly festivals that I play and they love it. I even had my six year old boy Eden get on the stage at Solfest whilst I was playing. He got up in front of 2000 people stripped off his top and had it large with no encouragement from anyone else. Maybe that is one of my career highlights. (Just to note my children always use proper wax ear plugs and are never allowed in front of speaker stacks.) Ed, it’s been great to chat with you and find out more about you, your past, present and future.
