Will Filo & Peri sing the birthday anthem for Peach?

Reported by Graham Gold / Submitted 12-09-07 23:21

Domenick Filopei & Bo Pericic, not names that roll off the tongue easily but after some nifty chopping action we get Filo & Peri well known purveyors of nifty trance. The New Yorkers have been appearing over the last few years on some pretty nifty labels as well and now they’re appearing in the UK for the first time, so who better to find out about them then the trance master himself Graham Gold.

With their smash hit The Anthem being rinsed by nearly every self respecting trance jock this side of Tibet, anyone who has even a passing interest in trance music should have been swept away by the wicked vocals provided by crooner Eric Lumiere. If, however, you’ve been under a rock, hiding from what passed as our summer this year, extricate yourself and get down to celebrate their coming and, maybe more importantly Peach’s 14th birthday at Heaven on Friday 21st September!

Graham: Without doubt you have guys have produced “THE ANTHEM” of this year. How long have you been producing together and how/when did you first hook up?

Domeninck: We’ve been producing together now for 4 years now but we’ve both been producing separately for at least six. We hooked up through a mutual friend after listening to each others music on trance.nu. Since we both lived in the same area, it made sense for us to see what we could accomplish together. The first record we ever made got picked up by Armin and we’ve been partners in crime ever since!

Filo & Peri are the first parts of your surnames, but it’s Dom and Bo to your mates which is a bit like The Dukes Of Hazard!! Ever had a Daisy in your life??

No not quite like that. But I tell you, it would be great if we had a Jessica Simpson parading around with us sweet talking everyone!

You have been really big in the US for some time now, with some awesome tunes out there - how did you first come to the attention of Paul van Dyk?

It was really by chance that we came to Paul’s attention. Both of us spoke to one of Paul’s assistant online on regular basis and we happened to send her an unfinished copy of Ordinary Moment that she passed on to Paul. I was browsing the net one day and saw that Paul played the unfinished version in his radio show. One thing led to another and we asked Vandit if they would be interested in signing the record. The rest is history!

What’s surprising to me is that whilst on home territory, you rule! But why, despite great productions, do you think the European market has taken a while to crack?

From a financial perspective it’s way more expensive for European promoters to fly and accommodate us all the way from America - that was a factor earlier on. It seemed that the European promoters were waiting around for us to produce a big hit so when we did start touring Europe, things would be done properly. Now that we have parties like Peach and Gatecrasher lined up, it doesn’t get much more proper than that!

Christopher Lawrence, Gabriel & Dresden and Marcus Shultz all have paved the way-were they any kind of inspiration to you?

In some ways yes, they are all inspiration. All of those guys have been in this industry for ten plus years and have taken a long time to establish their presence in the scene. This alone is a very admirable. I (Dom) remember when I first started clubbing about six years ago, Chris Lawrence was headlining some of my first raves. Now here it is six years later and I got to share the stage with him at a festival in Miami!

I have loads of US mates who are totally lovely but why is an American in a uniform (bouncer/immigration/janitor) always such a c*nt??!!! (LOL!!)

There are just a lot of rude and ignorant people in this world and it’s unfortunate how deep the ignorance runs on all sides. Graham - you get hassled by US customs and we get hassled everywhere else! When people see our US passport they automatically assume we are ignorant, stupid Americans. You can’t let those things get to you though and the best way to fight ignorance is with class and intelligence!

Dom, you told me how important vocals are too you in a track, as far as I am aware “Anthem” is the first time you have used a rock vocalist on. Who had the idea and how did you hook up with Eric?

Well, not quite. Fisher (the vocalist on Ordinary Moment) did some rock stuff too. However, Eric is mainly a rock artist. Bo and Eric both studied at NYU and it was there that they made the connection. Bo was very fortunate to have his career already going while still in school as most of the other kids were still only aspiring to have careers. The minute we heard some of Eric’s material we immediately knew it would be a fresh change for trance music.

Do you have a list of people you would like to work with, and not knowing your musical backgrounds, ever thought of trying to talk any soul divas into doing vocals on a trance track?

A small list of people that we would like to work with would include Rob Thomas, Bono, Snow Patrol. It’s possible for a diva to work on a trance track but it would have to be the right fitting voice and the right fitting track.

Who does what in the studio - are you both trained musicians / sound engineers?

Fortunately we are both equally capable and the work is almost always 50/50. There have been a small number of tracks we’ve released that were only produced by one or the other. However, since we’re both very loyal to each other you’ll never know who does exactly what on a particular song. We do not separate the jobs in the studio. As long as the work gets done it does not matter to us who does what.

There is a bit of an age difference between you (though nothing like me and my girlfriends!!). Dom you are the elder, does that make you the boss?

Ha ha! I’d like to think I am always the boss but in reality we do not run our team like that. We’re both the bosses and we try not to let the age get in the way. Bo’s damn height might make me look like a midget though but I assure you I am quite normal!

Do you hang out together when at home, or are you quite different people? Who’s the biggest party animal?

We spend most of our free time at the studio working so we are together pretty much seven days a week! Overall we are quite different people and I think that’s what makes things work. We balance each other out in a lot of different ways since we are both experienced in different areas. We are party animals behind the decks but otherwise we are pretty laid back. It’s hard to be a party animal when you’re are a work-a-holic!

How is clubbing in New York now? Rudolph Giuliani, who strictly enforced a zero tolerance policy on everything, left office in 2002 and was replaced by another Republican, Michael Bloomberg. Has he followed in his predecessor’s footsteps?

I think there was a time when clubland was out of control in New York and that’s why the laws were enforced. Unfortunately the balance is not quite there yet.

Do you think it’s a bit mad that you can buy a gun at 16, have kids at 16, but not have a bottle of beer till you are 21?

Sure! That’s why kids are drinking beer here at 14! The more you tell people they can’t do things, the more they’ll push to do it.

Have you travelled much outside of the US, and if so, where have you enjoyed visiting most? (I promise you Ibiza WOULD have been great if we could have gone ahead with our party there in August!)

Ibiza was still great. A little hot, but great! Bo’s been to Europe every summer throughout his whole life (his roots are Croatian), but I haven’t. That trip to Ibiza was my first time entering Europe! Go figure!

Even playing across all the States in the U.S., do you find a difference in crowd mentality / knowledge?

For sure. Some clubs draw a musically educated crowd, some draw a drug crowd, while others draw the yuppies!

I think “Anthem” is scheduled for a top 5 crossover hit record here-could that be the case for you back home?

I am really glad you think so. We can only hope the mainstream audience takes to it like clubland did! A top 5 in the USA? Drinks on us if it is!

What is next from Filo & Peri? You must have been working on an album?

We are! Well tentatively! We’re waiting to see how Anthem is taken around the world and then we are going to go from there. It’s a lot of hard work to create 10-12 great songs that people will appreciate but we’re extremely pleased with the progress so far. We want to make sure that we can maximize our audience for the album.

Do you have the “block party” thing in New York like they do on NYE in L.A.?

Nope! Just Times Square!

September 21st, you make your UK debut at the Peach 14th birthday party at Heaven in London-how excited are you?

We are VERY excited. Think about it, the UK is the dominant culture in dance music. Everyone follows you guys. To us, debuting in the UK is breaking a major barrier for us as American artists.

Thanks so much for your time, and can’t wait to see you on the CDJ’s!

YEH MAN!

Plus there will be a whole host of suprises going on through the night so keep your eyes open!! And a birthday present from us to you! It's also the start of our Nu Generation room, which will happen monthly, where we give new talent a chance to play at Londons best Friday night. (Thanks to everyone for the response to this-it was a real mission replying to all the e-mails!!)

Headlining will be Cosmic Gate (both Bossi & Nic Chagall), plus we fly Filo & Peri in from New York City-the guys behind the biggest trance anthem for years - "The Anthem"- for their FIRST EVER UK appearance)

And with so many dj's, we are also staying open an extra hour until 7, so there won't even be any hanging around for trains home-how considerate!
