Mark Lambert gets ready to unleash Capital Carnage

You may not know the name, you may not know the face - but chances are you will have experienced an event that had something to do with Mark Lambert. For the past 10 years Mark has been working in and around the music scene on events as diverse as Helter Skelter to Global Gathering to HTID in the Sun. Now he’s teaming up with Frantic and Freeformation to bring audio destruction to the streets of London at Capital Carnage.
Starting his career at a small Garage night called Club Sidewinder, Mark has expanded to running multiple events across many genres such as Hardcore Til I Die, Random Concept and Raver Baby to name but a few, with sheer dedication to the job and to putting on the perfect party getting him to the position he enjoys now. A notoriously private man, he has broken the silence with this exclusive interview to mark Capital Carnage.
How do you think your previous careers compare to what you do now?
A lot easier than my current career! If anyone thinks being a promoter is a glorious lifestyle I will here and now give you some very priceless and sound advice. Being a promoter you need to live it, you need to work approx 60 – 80 hours a week and be available at anytime of the day and at the same time be able to handle artists continually thinking your making millions where in reality you’re making the opposite!
Hardcore has hit the commercial big time lately; do you think this is important to the scene?
Yes definitely. As long as we don’t go crazy and flood the market. It’s good to educate the main stream along with enlightening them that we also produce quality music. At the same time we may show them the light that there is more to life than going to the pub, falling out the pub into a Time & Envy club, getting blown out by every girl as they try and chat them up whilst dribbling and then finishing the night off with a kebab and fight, not to mention abusing the taxi driver on the way home!
How hard do you think people have had to work to get hardcore back into the public eye?
It’s not brain surgery, they just need to continue producing a quality product. Every normal person can distinguish between good and bad, even if you don’t like a music type you can easily identify the difference between a quality product and a product that has been thrashed out with no thought or effort.
What key points can other, now reducing, scenes take from hardcore?
Keep pushing the scene forward with a quality product and try and take note what the clientele actually want as they are the ones that pay your wages. Without them it doesn’t matter how good you think you are there is no future in what you do. Once you lose a scene it’s literally impossible to revive it so it’s best to be proactive before it’s too late.
How did the partnership between you and Hixxy come about?
He called me to say I really need your help, I want to promote HTID and I haven’t got a clue how to do it. I could very easily stitch Mr Hix right up here but unfortunately he will only do the same to me. But, be warned Mr Hix, you are going to get it very soon! And Mr Hix I’m very sorry that when you asked me to get you tickets for the Jeremy Kyle show I could only get you audience tickets and not a place to actually be a guest on the show, I don’t think Jeremy is ready for all your problems anyway, the show only last 30 mins not 30 days. Back to the question – I’ve had the pleasure to know Mr Hix for a very long time. I was already promoting other music events at Air in Birmingham and I believed that this venue would be perfect for a hardcore event. The word got around that I had these thoughts and, hey presto, Mr Hix called to see if I would consider doing Hardcore Till I Die (HTID) at the venue. The rest is history! We work well together (well I guide him anyway) and HTID events have grown from success to success - we have created a Monster.
Do you think there’s too much attitude and ego in the hardcore scene today and why?
Attitude – no. Ego - yes. Artists need to remember that they are only as big as people foresee them. Don’t kid yourself - it takes a lot of time and effort to be at the top but the fall can be very quick, nobody is invisible apart from myself! To be fair we don’t have many problems in our scene, other scenes are a lot worse. If we are classing hair styles in this category then yes we have a problem with Darren Styles as your Ego is way too big! You big girls blouse!
The hardcore scene is pretty tight knit do you think this had something to do with the reduction and eventual revival of the scene?
I think so. The scene started to go downhill 6 - 7 years ago as I believe it was lacking direction which also affected the quality of the music. Today I think this has definitely been rectified, the producers have realised this and together are moving the scene forward together rather than in all different directions making it a lot stronger.
What do you think of the developing freeform scene and sound?
I’m not really qualified to say as I’m the person who sorts out everything that other people don’t see or want to see! All I can say is freeform is definitely getting a lot more PR which importantly is all good. It’s the ravers choice - if they continue to create good music then the ravers will support it.
Is Lloret De Mar really the new Ibiza for today’s new wave of ravers and why?
We hope so. It’s perfect, all ravers can be together in one place whereas Ibiza is a very good location but I think we would get soaked up in all the house and trance heads. Lloret creats more of a community feel where everyone can easily meet up and have a real holiday. We like to think if you’re into hardcore then this is the prefect raving vacation. We are currently planning HTID IN THE SUN 2008 check out latest details http://www.htidinthesun.com.
Capital Carnage is HTID’s first event in London for 2 years – what made you want to do it?
It’s the perfect formula at one of the biggest raving locations in London what more can you ask?
Do you think there’s a danger of the scene imploding on itself again as everyone seems to be playing only their own stuff?
As long as there is a good variety and promoters make sure they consider this when booking line up’s and assigning set times then all ravers receive a variety along with experiencing other styles at the same time.
Just why do you think hardcore has become so popular again?
A combination of good quality music, good artists, good venues and most important the atmosphere that this all creates.
You’re always the behind-the-scenes man – do you prefer it like that?
Definitely if you can find the kettle you can find me, haha.
This is the first time HTID has teamed up with Frantic & Freeformation. Why did the 3 of you choose to come together?
Why not? We believe that this is a great formula - all 3 brands under one roof. The styles of music are very similar. Many HTID ravers for example like Freeform along with Hard House. If you do or if you don’t you have the choice at Capital Carnage on Sat 8th September @ SEOne, London. You cannot afford to miss this!
Thanks Mark, we’ll see you later for a cup of tea then.
Thanks for so many questions.
