Ilogik causes a STORM as he looks forward to INSEKT

This months heavyweight showdown between the club of the year STORM and London’s premier hard house event INSEKT is shaping up to be a full on, knock down, drag out 15 rounder.
With the under card consisting off Storms main man Garbo, INSEKTs own Karim, Chris Comben, Marc Johnson and James Nardi aswell as the bright young up and coming Tom Basquil the main event is surely about two men.
In the red corner, hailing all the way from sunny Spain, INSEKT welcomes Mr Steve Thomas while in the blue corner, hailing from Bradford, making his return to INSEKT the one, the only, king of all things elastic: Ilogik
We caught a few moments with Ilogik to go deeper and find out what's been helping him to train for his upcoming appearance at this special event.
We first heard about you in the hardcore scene after releasing the massive anthem Kick Your Legs on Essential Platinum, did you find it difficult getting accepted into another scene coming from one in which you were so well known in?
Not at all, you would expect that but I suppose I wasn’t massive in the hardcore scene. It may have been different if it was at the top of my game in that scene but I was climbing the ladder at the time. It was an easy stepping-stone for me and I had the advantage of knowing how to get my self known and how to get my name out there plus I had many years DJing experience behind me. It all helped.
With the hardcore scene thriving, many of its old time stalwarts have re emerged and some from the hard dance scene have gone back, have you ever been tempted to get back into that sound and raise the BPMs?
Not really, I have been asked to play a few hardcore sets here and there but I’m not tempted, not yet anyway. I still love it and am still mates with all of the hardcore lot. I may do a track but we will have to see. My main objective is to keep the hard dance scene afloat.
You’ve recently taken DJing to another level by incorporating visuals into your set and in hard dance terms are one of the first to be able to perform a VDJ set. What inspired you to do this ?
God knows, I saw the pioneer DVJ x1 and that’s all that was needed. I’ve always been one to take mixing to the next stage and I felt that I couldn’t do much more than I had already done with 3/4 CDJs. The next stage was visuals. Its hard work though and it seems as though not too many people know exactly what it is.
We hear you’ve enrolled in University to enhance this. Tell us some more?
Well, I enrolled and then de rolled. I did one year of a computer animation course, it was going good but I felt it had started to eat into my production and DJng time. I’m in New Zealand at the moment while writing these answers and if hadn’t quit when I did I would be writing a 3000 word essay on culture and Marxism now, along with a 30 second cartoon to complete, a 3 hour exam in a program called Maya, a 3 hour exam in c++ computer programming and a 3 hour exam in networking. Far too much work for someone who has their own business. I’m still going to do the animation at home and learn myself, that way I will not get the baggage of other subjects that just took up too much time.
Your Elasticman label has been one of the main stays in hard dance in recent times. How difficult is it to keep motivated to be releasing vinyl in a ever changing age?
Well it’s as difficult as ever now, we are still going strong but it is hard work. It is particularly made hard by little wanna-be fools that copy our music for their mates and everyone else. A track in particular is No Way by Ian M, which Karim remixed for my Elasticman Platinum label. I gave this track to 5 people and then recently found out that loads of Birmingham DJs have had it for ages! Obviously I’m fuming about this and have decided that this will not get released now. So far I have traced it back to a DJ called Steve NRG. He’s not willing to tell me who gave it to him and so he will be scorned by it. His so-called love for the scene, it makes me laugh. Its people like this that are fucking up our scene. The top producers will stop making hard dance soon if stuff like this keeps happening. After this episode I’ve even toyed with the idea of not releasing tracks any more, instead just making tracks for me to DJ with. It seems like the only way to stop this happening and that’s a shame.
You and long time studio buddy Paul Janes have recently got together to create an off shoot to the popular Elasticman with Elastcman Platinum which is about re-rubbing some of yesterday’s greats? With Odyseey and Fantastic Thing already out and the Killer waiting in the wings, what’s up coming to get the record buyers juices flowing?
Well I would have said Ian M “No Way” but as discussed this will not be released. We have other tracks though, such as Paul Janes: House Gets Warm, Dave Holmes: Devotion, Mark Kavanagh: Bad Boy and a few other Dave Holmes classics that came out on Cream a while back. Also an old Ilogik track you may have heard Bounce One Time with some brand new mixes. Let’s hope that these get releases hey!
How often will we see the releases hitting the shelves?
Well its supposed to be 1 a month but we paused until our distributor pays up! Its all fun and games.
The pair of you have recently taken the show on the road with a live PA at Storm. For those that don’t know, how much work actually goes into a Live PA and are you looking to do more of them in the coming months?
Yeah it is hard work to be honest but we are looking at doing more PAs down the line. We have one booked in Plymouth and will be doing some in London at some point but we’re still keeping them limited. They are so hard to do.
Do you think we’ll ever see the 1210’s or CDJ’s being replaced in clubs with laptops. Is this good for the art of DJing? Does it take some of the craft out of the game?
Well probably not, mixing on a laptop is very uninteresting and it also takes a kind of flow out of a set. I recently listened to a Sasha mix on Ableton and felt that he had lost the smooth flow that he has when he plays on turntables. I think the cdj is as computerized as it should go, you can’t tell what people are doing on laptops. Even FX units take things away from the aspect of DJing. I went a good few months making tracks on FX units but it kind of takes it away from the crowd as they only want to hear the tune kick in so they can dance and messing around too much ruins it from their point of view. Of course there is room for the odd tricks here and there but that’s what I found anyway.
Over the years your sound has broken out of the UK and gone global. Out of all the places you have been lucky to visit what ranks as your favourite and do you have any exciting trips coming up?
Well as mentioned I’m in New Zealand now, its been really good. I have a good name over here and always pull a good crowd. They always go that much harder over here too as they are not spoilt with DJs from the UK that often. From here I go to Jakarta to play at a beach party at the weekend, which should be interesting to say the least, as long as I don’t get arrested.
Your debut solo My Definition Of Sound proved to be a big hit with the clubbers. How long did it take you to prepare the album and are there any plans for a follow up?
The album took about a year to do. I did about a track a month which is slow going but I was creating new tracks and using sounds that I don’t normally work with as I wanted the album to build and build. It was a good learning curve. With regards to a follow up, I’m thinking of doing something again, we will have to see. Maybe I could do a mixed Elasticman Platinum album.
With the scene’s sound constantly changing and drawing new inspiration what do you think will be the latest incarnation will be and where do you see the music heading this year?
I would like to see the music going back say 5 years, the old unbouncy off beat style with production that’s more up to date. It’s the style you’ll hear in my newest tracks and I’m very happy with it. There’s too much of the same old same old stuff and that just needs to stop.
With attendances constantly fluctuating in the clubs what do you think needs to happen to preserve the genre from going extinct and re-emerging like the hardcore scene has in recent times?
Better music. There’s too many bedroom DJs attempting to make hard house, it doesn’t sound clever but still gets released on mp3. This then finds its way into DJ sets and played in clubs. If a person is just being introduced to hard house and hears this stuff there first opinion is that its crap. It does nothing good for the promotion of the scene. There’s also the problem of copying tracks for other people. Producers then stop making tracks as they aren’t making any money but its these very same guys that are needed to keep the scene going. Think about it, don’t download a track without paying for it, think about the implications and support the labels and producers.
You are making your second appearance at London’s Premier Hard House event INSEKT who go to head to head with Midlands finest in Storm. Having played for both events before, what are you expecting at one of London’s most historic venues and what could be quite a historic night?
Well I’m looking forward to playing! INSEKT is going from strength to strength which is good, I’m very happy for the guys as they have put a lot of hard work into the night and its paying off. They come up with original line-ups that have a certain amount of quality about them. Storm needs no introduction either, they are flying the flag in the Midlands and doing good for the scene so its good to see them spreading their wings a little.
What do you have in your bag of tricks for the event and what can we expect to be hearing?
Well my set will be mainly old bouncy stuff mixed with some speeded up hip hop! Only joking! I will have lots of new stuff from Elasticman to Elasticman Platinum and various juicy bits from other people’s labels. You’ll just have to wait to see what gets pulled out of the bag. Bring it on!

I enjoyed reading that!! Hopefully "these" people will read this and think again before accepting copies of tracks they shouldnt have, off people or putting them on their mixes and hosting it on forums. Its destroying the scene.
Anyway,I have just seen Ilogik only the once so Im looking forward to seeing him again this weekend. Cant wait!!
