When was the last time you partied for two weeks straight? Well, get ready to go for it again in beautiful South Africa. Global Breakthrough is bringing the party to Cape Town courtesy of Jamie Joseph, who has networked with major labels, promoters, and even MTV in an attempt to build a bridge of music from Europe to Africa. With parties and various events set to happen in such unique locations as a wine farm, a private beach, a luxurious mansion, an aquarium, a film studio and even a waterfront warehouse, Global Breakthrough stands ready to deliver on their promise to replace outdated party scenes in Ibiza and Miami, and turn Cape Town into a force to be reckoned with.
On November 9th we got a tiny taste of things to come with a 5 dj line-up consisting of Cass, Clive Henry, Shane Watcha, and South African talent Dino Moran. Dino was nominated by DJ Mag as one to watch, and has played benefits for Nelson Mandela. In a stellar venue like The Key, all of these men were truly allowed to shine.
This was not your regular jam packed, sweaty club night, and this was not your run of the mill music. Each dj had a unique and telling sound, and in such an intimate, simple setting, it carried perfectly. The disco style light up dancefloor in The Key really adds to the décor, and the club itself is extremely inviting, with plush couches and chairs. There is plenty of space for you to sit and have a breather after dancing your heart out, and friendly bar staff to boot.
The club is bigger than it seems at first glance, although for a good portion of the night people seemed to huddle around the bar, nursing drinks and catching up with old friends. Because the venue is on the intimate side, it was easy to meet up with people, and conversation was flowing. As the night wore on, more and more people drifted onto the dancefloor as the music flowed from trancey beats, on to harder rhythms.
Dino Moran is truly a man of his music, spinning African fusion that simply forces you to move. It wasn’t until after his set that I was even able to draw a smile from him, and only because he wasn’t above the decks. He almost seemed to change into a different person, because while he is making his music, the sound is his only focus, and the sound is good. Moran played a standout set that the assembled really seemed to enjoy, grooving along to the web that was being weaved for them. Although he rarely looked up from his tools, he gave the people a look at why he is such an up and coming name. It’s obvious we will hear from this man again.
As great as all the supporting acts were, it wasn’t until Cass came on that you knew this was a real party. Things picked right up, and where there may have been people surrounding the bar during the earlier sets, once Cass started there wasn’t a soul. Every ass was on the dancefloor, whether you were dancing or just cheering as you bobbed to the beat. Cass’s sound is that he has no sound, interweaving an assortment of styles and mixes in such a way that you can’t help but be impressed with his originality. He obviously has a lot of fun on the job, pausing occasionally to pull a funny face for the fans with cameras or cell phones, and then jumping right back into the mix. Even MTV UK was in the house, filming as he worked the crowd, first speeding up, and then slowing things down a bit only to ramp it back up to 11.
Again I’ll stress, this was not your average party. Even at its peak, there were less than 100 people at The Key for this show, but there is no cause for alarm. It may take a minute for the word to get around, but something big is coming out of Cape Town. It may start as a tremor, but it will end as a quake, so if you’re someone who keeps an eye on emerging talent, get in on it fast. And if you’re not busy from February 17th – March 3rd, I’ll see you there.
