HarderFaster interview with Visual Rhythm

Visual Rhythm! Who are they? Well we are about to find out and delve deep within the unique conceptual world of who they are and what they have done for the club industry. “Who is behind this mysterious mask?” I hear you say. Whilst many of you are stomping away to the sounds of the dj or PA playing, there is a dark and visual impact that now appears before you in many forms that leaves the crowd agasp, wondering what is going on and what is about to happen. Their world is when fantasy becomes reality.
This world as seen on many stages, including MTV, is the brainchild of its creators Tony T and Kez. You know you’re in for the club experience of your life when you witness this concept of stage performing art that is the legendary Visual Rhythm! This Friday 18 August Visual Rhythm are in London to perform the world exclusive of their human light show at the return of the legendary Superfish! We got them to put their feet up for a few minutes to answer a few questions.
Tony and Kez, great to catch up with you! Many thanks for the interview time and how are you both?
We couldn’t be better thanks.
Tony you go back many years in showman ship within the club scene. How did you start and what was your involvement?
My love and passion for music from a very early age got me started in the dance and performing arts side of things. Let’s say I have seen and danced to a few different styles of music throughout the years and loved every minute, especially when the house scene started to hit the UK in the late 80s, what a buzz that was — from disco to house, but with better parties. My early years were primarily dancing whenever and wherever I could, the pay was bad but the satisfaction was fantastic.
You have worked with the infamous performer ‘Shuggy’ aka Man In A Suitcase (as seen in Kevin & Perry). How did this relationship transpire?
I met Shugg in 97 when I was dancing at the Arches in Sheffield. We arranged a meeting and from then on I joined Thiatrix, which was Shugg’s performing group. We went on to perform the Sundissential tour all over the country, spreading the Sundissential vibe; this was when Sundissential was a Sunday night event at the Church in Birmingham.
So where exactly have you performed event wise?
Venue 44, Vibealite, Sundissential, Slinky, Room at the Top, the Bulldog bash, Gatecrasher, T in the Park, Knebworth Festival, Purple in the Park, Godskitchen, Sundissential, Arches, D.T.P.M London, Federation Leeds & Manchester, Kremlin Holland, Ministry of Sound, the Southcoast Weekender, the Pleasure Dome, Area 51, Bionic Wales, Tidy Weekenders 2, 3, 4, 5. Tidy Magna, Tidy Magna Space, Tidy Magna NYE, Also numerous Luminar Leisure Clubs and First Leisure Clubs and many more . . .
You went onto become co-creator of the One–Love performing team make up. What was your position and what did this involve?
Yes, this was a very interesting and colourful part of my performing career. I met Clem and Maureen by chance when I went out for a night at the then One–Love event. At the time they were having problems with their existing performers, so they asked me if I would come and perform at their event, which I did. I then started to create rosters and running ordered shows using young dancers that One–Love had which worked very well, though they were very wild. Then, due to reasons I will not mention, it was decided to close the event and start the One–Love tour.
At this point I started to write over a hundred fire/grinder combination shows with full running order. I also started making and creating costumes, shows and fire equipment, such as the fire sword and large fire staff. I used to hold midweek training sessions for all the performers to learn how to dance and move on stage, plus use a multitude of fire and grinder equipment so that the shows became second to none!
I must say that we had a fantastic time in our part of the creation of One–Love.
Kez, this is also where you got involved with performing arts, something you must get a lot of satisfaction from?
Unmeasurable satisfaction, I love expressing the music and get a natural high when on stage. Let’s say I’m hooked and have been over the past five years.
You’ve had 12 months off from the scene what have you been up to in that time?
Yes, we have had a break to recuperate our energies so to speak. We went on a personal tour of the USA, which was fantastic, and it gave us time to work on new projects for the future. We also went out clubbing in the States and UK, as this was one thing we could never do when we were performing every weekend.
The shows you perform are unique and original to you both, where others try to replicate. What work is involved in each show? And how do you come up with so many ideas?
Though we have many shows in costume and base concept, each time we perform the shows at different venues we have to adapt to the surroundings, clientele and music, in this way the shows are unique to each event we perform. To be truthful, I usually come up with show concepts whilst relaxing in a Radox bath LOL. Once we have a concept for a show we take it through a study of implementation and plausibility. There are so many variables that make some shows none viable for club stage shows, safety being a major aspect especially when fire or grinders are involved.
Once we have decided upon a show we then look at the construction of costumes. Because we are dance show performers all our costumes have to be designed to give maximum movement and have durability, as a massive head peace looks good if you are just walking around, but try dancing to 150 bpm . . . wallop, it’s on the floor! Not good! But horses for courses. Then to top off the shows, we give them our natural stage presence LOL.
What has been the Visual Rhythm highlight so far for you both, and where have you taken your concept?
Tidy Trax Weekenders 4 and 5 have to be the highlights of Visual Rhythm. We were invited to do all three nights for both Weekenders, which meant we had to create and perform 12 unique shows for each event, giving a gradual build up in impact and intensity throughout the weekends, baring in mind that the shows were performed to the same clubbers on each night. After seeing us perform at the first tidy Magna event, tidy decided that they would build us a purpose built stage to perform our shows, on which was fantastic. This was a challenge for Visual Rhythm, which we achieved with great success and enjoyed every minute. Thanks tidy!
So dj-wise and live act wise who have you both done your shows for?
You asked for it !!!!! Tidy Boys, Lisa Lashes, Lisa Pinup, Anne Savage, Andy Farley, Paul Glazby, Yoji Biomehanika, Lab 4, Charlotte Birch, Marco V, BK, Eddie Halliwell, to name but a few!
The Visual Rhythm experience always worked well with Lab 4 why do you think this is?
Mainly because of stage presence which both Lab4 and ourselves have plenty of. The music is a governing factor when we perform and Lab4 being a live PA have the opportunity to work with us, giving a visual interpretation to their music. When on stage with Lab4 we all seem to gel into one and bounce off each other, us to their music and Lab 4 to our visual interpretation of their music, which then becomes a live audio visual jam session. Natural talent at its best!
You have also appeared on MTV as part of the Breed 77 hit ‘World’s On Fire’ music video. This was also awarded Music Video of the Month. How does this make you both feel and what was involved show wise?
It was great to find out that world on fire made MTV’s video of the month. Nathan, the director of the Breed 77 video, knew that he wanted fire but was unsure on how to utilise it within the video concept. We advised them on what we could do, using the fire equipment in different positions to create maximum background impact. We also added grinding to the video for an extra industrial feel. This was a great experience for us working with Breed 77, the guys were brilliant to work with, though at one point Tony did make it a little too hot to handle for Paul (the lead vocalist) when he put the ring of fire around him . . . Would you both agree that the events out there should be aiming at the audio and visual combination? What are your views on this?
The live audiovisual combination always works and gives far greater impact than either on their own. One of the main problems is the misconception that it is always massively expensive to produce this within the dance club environment, but the difference is, do you want your night to give the maximum impact to your clubbers so that they keep coming back for more, then balance this when trying to promote or produce an event in a highly competitive and volatile market, where everybody is giving the same product?! So in short, yes, it would make a refreshing change. Let’s put it this way, wouldn’t it be great if each dj or live PA had their own stage production to give a visual interpretation of their music, WOW, what a buzz for the clubbers. But you could say we are a little biased with this question.
Your concept and stage performances are simply taking the club scene to the next level right? Giving the whole scene the values that are required to evolve more?
Right, we have a concept that we have been working on for a long time within the clubbing environment, so now know the pitfalls of creating these types of shows. However, with minimal disruption to the events already out there, they could convert to this concept and create something that is unique and new again, just like the early days of house. The only way to evolve is to add to and move forward as the word implies, otherwise you stagnate.
Does club size matter to you? Or do you prefer to work on a stage?
We prefer to work on a stage or platform, especially near the dj too create a focal point, but the size of the club doesn’t matter, as we adapt the shows to suite the environment to maintain impact at all levels.
Each show is unique to you and you have said that no show is ever the same keeping each show fresh and alive with major impact to those who witness them. What would you say to those wanting more than just the dj set?

In the time you’ve had off you have just launched the Visual Rhythm web site. What can we expect to see from this?
Just like our shows, the web site will keep developing.
You’ve not staged any shows in London since Lab 4’s 4/4/4 event. Not only is this your Superfish! debut, but it’s also your first appearance as Visual Rhythm presents GEN-X, a definite guarantee of some thing very special. What have you got planned for this?
We are really looking forward to the Superfish! event on the 18th at the Fridge, plug, plug! It gives us an opportunity to have fun with our shows as GEN-X on a London stage, especially with the legendary Superfish!, Tinrib production, which in the past have been second to none. We are also launching a world exclusive show we have been developing involving light and the human form. On top of this, we will be performing numerous stage dance shows throughout the night.
You’ve always wanted to work with Jon Bell aka Captain Tinrib. Can we see any more stage input from you in the future alongside Captain Tinrib?
Jon is a highly creative musician and extremely theatrical in his performances, which is what we highly commend in a live PA, so let’s say the concept is there to create a high impact stage spectacular.

Yes, we would like to thank all that we have worked with in the past and all that we will work with in the future.
