Innovate 2nd Birthday reviewed

Reported by Jamie McCarogher / Submitted 09-08-06 18:20

This was one of the few events this year that I was really looking forward to. Innovate has never dissatisfied me in the past and this event was no exception. Amazing music, people and atmosphere and if you missed this then all I can say is, unlucky!

Saturday evening (July 15th) was when it all started, just come back from an amazing boat party and I wanted more! I’d taken a peek at the line-up before heading out and was really looking forward to seeing some of the acts on show, as I’d heard many good things but never had the chance to experience them for myself. I wasn’t let down at all.

I got to the Fridge slightly later than I had originally wanted to, due to London Underground’s secret conspiracy to try and ruin everyone’s evenings. The fact that my journey had been a nightmare was quickly erased by the friendliness of the Most Wanted staff on the door and the funny doorman doing their routine searches as we came in. As I entered the main room I was pleasantly surprised to see a few faces I hadn’t seen in ages. The night was already off to a great start.

After I had finally gotten myself a drink I decided to have a little wander around. Let me tell you, the Fridge looked amazing with Innovate inflatables, helium filled balloons littering the ceiling and an amazing looking stage setup that was to be the setting for the Edison Factor’s live show. My attention was soon drawn to Symbiosis, who was having the time of his life behind the decks in the main room. The fact that it was still early and not many people had arrived yet did not deter this man from enjoying every minute of his Fridge debut, hopping around like a possessed man behind the decks. He really lightened the mood and helped get everyone into the party spirit with his innovative happy go lucky style. He went on so much that I even noticed Nick Sentience decide to strap down the equipment he’d be using later in his live PA.

Next behind the decks was Eduardo Herrera playing b2b with Mike Redina, and as at the same time 2PhunkedUP were mashing up the second room, 11pm–12am saw me doing a lot of running back and forth not being able to get enough of the mind blowing mixture of techno, funk and electro that was being blasted by the two rooms. Eduardo Herrera and Mike Redina really set the stage for the main room with more and more people flocking to the dance floor.

At 12am I wandered off to the second room again to see Mat Lock play a blinding set — a lot harder than I’ve ever heard him before. I’ve been quite a fan of Mat’s trancey grooves for quite some time now and he just keeps getting better and better every time I hear him play out. The only problem I had was the heat in the second room: even though a huge fan was brought in, it did little to drop the temperature, resulting in me missing DJ Zone’s 1am set, sorry Dean!

1am saw Ali Wilson take on the dance floor for his Tekelec showcase. This was one of the sets I had been really looking forward too as I’d never seen him play out before. I really enjoyed his style albeit it was not nearly as hard as I had expected, nonetheless it had me well impressed, although the dance floor quietened down to an extent everyone was still smiling and really enjoying the music!

Ready to pick up where Mr. Wilson left off was Nick Sentience performing his live PA. The crowd had absolutely kicked off by this time and the dance floor was rammed with people. To add to the already amazing atmosphere, fireworks were set off from the rafters in time with the music, with huge inflatable bouncy balls being thrown over the top balcony and the crowed erupted in true Innovate style! Nick did a blinding show and I, along with my mates, stomped to every second of it!

The end of Nick’s set was signalled by the music dying down and what sounded to me like music coming from a separate set of speakers kicking in from behind. This announced the start of The Edison Factor’s live show, which, in my opinion, was the show most enjoyed by the mass of clubbers in attendance. I never get tired of watching these guys doing their live show. The guitar solo of ACDC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ was an especially nice touch. The show eventually climaxed with a live performance of James Lawson’s ‘Incendiary Device’ and even more fireworks meant it was almost time for the next dj to try his luck at the decks.

But this gentleman hasn’t needed luck to get a crowd raring for more! Phil Reynolds picked up where The Edison Factor left off, playing a really, really awesome selection of the finest hard trance on the scene at the moment, with tunes such as Ashley James and Trevor McLachlan’s ‘What Ya Doin’. This set, like all the others before it, had the place absolutely rocking!

Nicki S was next to show us what she does best, hammering out a selection of banging tunes that depict her own very unique style; this woman really knows how to party, and party hard at that! Unfortunately due to prior arrangements going all wrong I had to leave halfway through her set, but have it on the best authority that the Fridge was still kicking right until the end!

The promoters at Innovate really outdid themselves with this one. I had the time of my life, what an amazing way to finish off and already amazing weekend! I’d like to see what they have in store for next time, I mean, how can one perfect on perfection?
