Tidy Weekender 9 Live preview with Lisa Pin-Up Reported by MostwantedJonathan / Submitted 26-04-06 19:46 Lisa Pin-Up is a name everyone is familiar with. The queen of bounce, her popularity amongst hard dance fans is as ever huge. She is the stunning, ever so nice girl from next door. There is nothing “I’m famous” about Lisa Pin-Up. She is as she was before dj superstardom hit. Pin-Up was part of the original tidy Girls line-up back in 1999 and has since gone on to be one of the world’s most sought after girlie djs. Her set at the last tidy Weekender was hailed as one of her best, and good job too as it was being recorded for her first ever tidy album, The tidy Weekender 9 Live triple CD which comes out next Monday. We had a leisurely coffee with Lady Pin-Up to talk girls, bounce, her debut album and Ibiza. How you doing girl, what have you got planned for the weekend? Well I am going to be a very busy girl indeed! I’m starting off a tour that I am doing called ‘Back in the Day’ which you can guess by the title is a club classic tour. I’ll be kicking this off at Brighton this Thursday at Creation, then Friday I am doing the same tour at Icon in Bolton. Then on the Saturday I am off to a small intimate club called Club Q in Layton, East London. People always ask me ‘do I like doing small venues’ as I am used to playing such massive events, well the answer is I love it, as they seem like your own private party and I remember as a clubber I used to love the underground small venues. Then on Sunday I am at Funky Bunny in Norfolk where my set is to be recorded live for Vibe FM, then off to Polysexual in Birmingham for a 4am–6am set, and as it’s so late I’ll be pulling out some party tunes there. Let’s talk about the big bang, that time when girlie djs hit the scene, making you a household name. What exactly happened? For me my first big break was at a club called Pushca in London. It was a huge big glam club that I played for around 1995. Then Miss Moneypennys in Birmingham heard a mix I sent them and signed me up straight away to their dj agency, playing their club regularly and touring all around the country. Next came Freedom in London who let me push the sound that was most close to my heart, more harder edged music which I ended up doing a weekly residency for over 5 years 5am–7am each week. Then came along the tidy Girls project. Tidy Trax had this fantastic idea of getting all us harder sounding girl djs together to do the legendary tidy Girls project, making an E.P by having us all submit a track. At the time there was an explosion in hard house and I think this then took my career to another level. Has your music changed over the years? Tell us how you describe your style at the moment. I have been giving the tag of playing bounce, but I just love anything really with a huge off beat f**k off bassline! I do also like vocals in my tracks, anything catchy or amusing. I think my style has got a lot harder over the years, sometimes even people tell me I played the hardest set of the night, which is a bit shocking for me to hear, but I still always play up for it party music, even though it can sometimes be a bit twisted and dirty. I even don’t mind throwing in a softer more mainstream hardstyle track every now and then just to take my set to another level, as I just love the basslines in these kind of tracks, but even my hardest tracks are never deep or dark as it is just not in my nature. Your set at the last Weekender was hailed as one of the best. Bearing in mind you knew it was being recorded for the live album out next Monday, how much did you brick it before going on? It’s funny every time I know I’m going to be recorded live I dread it a little, as I think I will not be able to give as much time to the crowd, as most of the time my head’s down concentrating on what I am doing. But really the whole vibe of the night just takes over once you are behind those decks, and sometimes I have to tell myself to stop dancing and get back to the job at hand as I’m being recorded live, but it always works out fine, apart from the fact I nearly had a huge accident during my set at Tidy! The guys setting up the stage had given us djs a box to stand on as the decks were really high to look over; they pushed two boxes together but never thought of girls in heels. The boxes moved apart, my shoes went down the gap and I nearly broke my neck! Just think, it could have been all recorded, my last dying moments! How much planning went into that set? And how did it feel when you came off? The planning really goes into what tunes you are legally aloud to use, no unlicensed samples can be used, which is a nightmare in hard dance as so many tracks use them. But what was great about this album is that it was a general set I would play that was just being recorded, so I could chuck in a few of my older tunes that I would play in my sets, and I also used a few bootlegs that I have personally made myself using old tracks sliced together that you would not find anywhere in the shops. How does it feel to be part of the tidy family, and how are they treating you? Well I have now been working with them for so long I really know them all personally anyway, but they are a lovely bunch and a pleasure to work with. Having been associated with tidy for so long, how come it’s taken so long for you to do an album for them? I have actually already mixed a Hard House Euphoria along with the tidy Boys that Tidy arranged so you might say this is my second for them. But I have mixed so many albums in the past, the Hard House Nation series, two for Nukleuz and also one for BMG so I just think the timing has always been wrong in the past, but never mind, I’m sure now I am part of the tidy team there will be loads more in the future to follow. Ibiza is just around the corner, how excited are you, and where will you be playing? It is so silly, I have now been playing Ibiza for 10 years yet I still get so excited before going each year! I am playing the opening party at Es Paradis for Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria on June 6th then again on August 15th. Each time I go I always spend 4 days there, so there’s time to shop, get trashed and drink cocktails in the Pasha bar! Back to music Lisa, you’re fortunate enough to have a packed diary, what’s your secret when there are so many other big hitters suffering with dates? Well I never realised that they were, but as for me, I get booked by so many clubs because they know that I am a versatile dj and whatever the club I will keep the dance floor happy. I may play a club full of 4,000 clubbers like I recently did in Doncaster that is not normally a hard house night, so even though I play quite tough I can keep clubbers happy that might not have ever been to a hard house venue before. And then of course when it comes to the hardcore fans that like it really banging then I am happy to do this as well. Playing a different set and going to a variety of venues is really interesting and a fun thing to do. So I hear you have just released your 20th track on Nukleuz, tell us a bit about this and do you have any more plans to go in the studio soon? Yes, I can’t believe it has been this many tracks for the label. My last two releases on an E.P. were released in March called ‘Slave To Your Love’ and ‘Naughty Freak’. When I do a double sider I always like to do the first side as a more crossover track, this time it being a bouncy trance number and I even did the vocals myself. And the B side I like to make more banging, this time I have been told by the fans that the track has the same feel as one of my past tracks called ‘Baddest Mutha’, so with both tunes I can double the interest. I am also planning to go back in the studio in next week, I’ve got ideas for two more tracks and can’t wait to get started on them.
