Warped’s 4th Birthday: the inside story
Reported by Dan Andres

Warped has built up a reputation of being one of the longest standing midweek parties in North London, providing a platform for up and coming djs to showcase their talents behind the wheels of steel. Guaranteed a great vibe, this midweek madness of hard dance and techno tunes has always provided djs with a great setting and grunting sound system to pump out the tunes on a Wednesday evening.
With Warped’s 4th Birthday just around the corner this Saturday 18 March, I met up with Keg to get the inside story on North London’s best midweek party.
Keg & Melissa
Warped, how did it all begin? It’s one thing to try and organize a regular weekend event, why and how did you go about the idea of organizing a free midweek party in North London?
Torque were putting on parties at the Sindrome when the Spotted Dog asked them if they were interested in hosting a mid week funky night. Torque convinced them to make it a hard night instead and asked us for help. They gave us a one-month trial and four years later we’re still banging it out every Wednesday night.
Who are the people behind the running of Warped?
First of all there’s Macey and Claire from Torque who along with its 4 current residents take care of Warped’s weekly needs, and of course there’s the legendary Torque sound system that pumps out the tunes for us.
Who are the residents and how often do we get to see them play at Warped?
There have been 8 different residents over the years. Past residents have been: Lollipop, Dov, Coastar and Rik; and the current residents are myself, Brendon Currie, Brother Paul and Albi.
Warped starts at 7pm and goes through till midnight and provides five one hour sets every week, with two Warped and one Torque resident playing the first and last two sets of the night. We also have two guests come down and play every week.
That’s a lot of guests over four years, where have they all come from?
We have had bedroom djs through to some of the bigger names in London come down and play for us at Warped. Anyone who is capable of putting a demo together has a chance of playing at Warped and making the transition from the bedroom to a proper venue with a great crowd and a quality sound system.
One of the great things I have always enjoyed about Warped has been being able offer and provide a quality sound system and club environment for those who never get the chance to get out there and showcase their talents in a professional and friendly environment.
If you have a demo drop it in to us, we are at The Spotted Dog every Wednesday between 7pm and midnight, oh and it’s free, so bring down as many of your mates as you like!
Is Warped linked to any other promotions?
Warped is an offshoot of Torque.
What is the music policy at Warped?
Warped is a Wednesday night of hard dance, techno and trance.
Do you take in djs who wish to play different styles of music from time to time?
Not really, as we like to stick to a Wednesday night of hard dance to shake the week up. But we have had different rooms at some of our other parties and have a room of funky house and break beats at our birthday.
Do any of the guest djs you have play at Warped go on to play at Torque or any other parties around London?
All of the Warped residents have played at Torque parties. Whether it was at the Fridge, one of the thumping house parties, stomps at the Spotted Dog, trips into the forest or surfing the waves on the Thames, we’ve all had a chance sometime.
Other clubs some of the residents and guests have played at include Heat, The Finger Party, Antiworld, Fevah, Club 414 and the Cook.
Well with Warped being the first gig I ever played at in London — and I know I’m not alone here, as word on the street has it that many a dj get their first gig at Warped — I have to take my hat off to all the lovely crew that run Warped and wish you a very happy 4th birthday bash!
Cheers guys, lets get ready for some serious Warped on Wednesday madness for your 4th Birthday on Saturday 18th March.
