The King is back! Andy Farley finally returns to Koko to celebrate 10 years of Spencer Freeland's career

Undoubtedly one of the best DJs in hard dance, Andy Farley has been sadly missing from the London club scene of late. With only a handful of gigs in the capital each year, we’ve been feeling very neglected! Thank goodness then that this maestro of all things hard is touching down in London again very soon, at a venue he hasn’t played at in donkey’s years.
On March 11th, to help celebrate 10 glorious years in the business, Spencer Freeland will be joined by King Farley on the Koko main stage! So it’s back to the old school!
Over the past couple of years, Andy has been busy making waves in the techno and house scenes, with his night Blue doing the business at venues like Fire and Turnmills with some of the biggest names from around the world. His record label Blue Cubed has also been a resounding success, covering both riveting hard house and chunky techno to much acclaim.
His mixing is nothing short of faultless, and his sets never fail to amaze and surprise. If you haven’t seen Farley play before, do yourself a favour and go and see him performing in his natural habitat. It’s good to see him returning to a venue that he has decimated so many times before after such a long hiatus. See you down the front...
Hi Andy, how’s things in FarleyLand? Have you been as busy as ever?
Things are great thanks. Yes had a busy year last year, and gearing up for another one!
What kind of material is making up an Andy Farley set at the moment? I think last I saw you was at Creamfields, where you were knocking out some proper decent hard house beats…
A mixture of everything really! Hard house, hard trance, techno, electro and tek trance. I pretty much tailor my sets for which gig I’m doing which is great as it means I get a lot of variety.
Have you been in the studio much recently?
I’ve finally got round to starting a tune in my studio at home, which has been a long time (too long) coming! I’ve been trying a few different things too. I’ve done a couple of electro tracks, and some funky techno with Colin Barratt.
I’ll be doing some more hard tracks this year as I haven’t done any for a while. I’ve already done one with Colin, which I played out for the first time last weekend, and judging by the reaction it got, I’m hoping it’s going to be huge! I’m also looking at doing an album at some point, so lots going on.
How are things going with your label, Blue Cubed?
The fourth release by El Durangoz is up and running, whilst the fifth release by Captain Tinrib & Dave Randall is away being pressed as we speak, and that has a great remix from tenpm which should appeal to tek trance fans. There’s more to come from Tim Clewz, then after that the label will primarily focus on my own productions, which was my initial idea of setting up the label.
A while back you made a decision to launch an assault on the world of techno, branching out from your traditional hard house sound. How have your techno-orientated activities been going?
It’s been good, I’ve really enjoyed having the freedom to do different things. I also did a few house sets last year, so a real mixture. I’ve always loved and played techno in my sets to some degree anyway, so it was really just an extension of what I was already doing.
Could you explain to us how the whole Blue concept works? Who helps run the party with you and do you decide on all aspects of the party?
The Blue parties are done in conjunction with my agency Most Wanted. The concept was for me to be able to showcase what else I can do basically, as well as putting on a great party!
Which guests at Blue have really taken your breath away?
It would be difficult to pinpoint just one as they’ve all been amazing to be honest. We’ve had a great cross section of different guests too, covering the spectrum of house and techno.
What have the crowd been like at the events? True techno lovers, curious cross-over hard housers or a wide mixture of clubbers?
It’s been a really good cross section of house and techno fans along with people that the harder scenes that wanted to try something different.
Who in techno do you think really leads the way? There’s a lot of very unadventurous techno out there so I guess when someone does something a bit special it really stands out…
I tend to go for good tracks rather than individual artists, though Valentino Kanzyani & Hertz have really done some great stuff over the last year. Techno seems to be in a transition period at the moment anyway, with the more minimal tek house sound becoming very popular.
Do you have any nicknames that have been bestowed upon you over the years?
I seem to have acquired Mandy. along the way thanks to Steve Thomas!
On March 11th you will return to Koko for HeatUK’s 10 Years With Spencer Freeland event to join him during his 8 hour set for some back-to-back action. Do you remember when and how you first met Spencer?
I first met Spencer when I played for Frantic at The Rocket way back in 1999 I think it was!
How do you assess his contribution to the hard dance scene over the years?
He’s always been there rocking it as long as I can remember playing in London! It’s good to see him having a night dedicated to him too.
Returning to Koko will surely bring back some good memories for you. When did you last play?
I played the very last party when it was Camden Palace, and it was a Heat event I do believe. It’s going to be great to be back there again as well. I’ve had many happy Friday and Saturday nights playing in there.
We haven’t seen you playing in London much generally over the past year. Where else have you been playing and partying?
I’ve been travelling a lot over the last couple of years; I’ve been to Australia, Canada, Ibiza, Holland, Chile, America, Malta and Finland, as well as many trips across to Ireland & Scotland, and lots of UK gigs of course!
And finally, who do you feel are the unsung heroes of dance music?
The clubbers of course!
Photos thanks to Andy. Not to be reproduced without permission.

SPENCER FREELAND- ILLUMINATED!
Milestones like this have to be celebrated. Spencer Freeland is a legend of the underground. Having DJ-ed to over a million clubbers he now steps up to perform a world first. This is the very first 8-hour set from start to finish in the main room of the former Camden Palace!
He certainly has the credentials to see this through. With over 200 gigs performed here during the former rave days, he now turns back the clock to unwind 10-years of music and the golden years of hard dance with a production showpiece other events can only boast about.
HeatUK is all about innovation and pushing boundaries. From the unforgettable Rock Saturday afternoon sell-outs through to the high-risk South West Four festivals for 20,000 people – the brand continues to push and challenge the clubland massive and those who shout ‘dance music is dead’.
On March 11 witness history in the making as Spencer illuminates and delivers a set like no other. Along this journey, he will be joined by some very special guests. An elite group of DJs who have become legends in their own lifetime.
SPECIAL GUEST
Exclusive first! Andy Farley – classic Camden Palace set!
The King returns! This is an occasion like no other. ‘The uncrowned King Of Hard House’ has only ever played one event for HeatUK at the former Camden Palace. That night will go down in history as ‘The Final Curtain’. At 8pm the queues snaked around the block in what was our fastest ever selling event at this world famous venue. Tonight Andy Farley returns for a first time ever back 2 back performance alongside Spencer Freeland. Together this promises to explode with anthem after anthem from the golden era. Can the Palace withstand the return of the King?
