Tommy Four Seven and why he's getting some Kosmetic Surgery

18 year old Tommy Four Seven has been playing out in clubs for less than 12 months. In that time he’s played over 90 professional gigs in London, Ibiza and Scotland, bagged three residencies, and produced more than a handful of tracks.
His popularity started to take off just a couple of months of playing out, after being given a rare opportunity to play at guest slot on the strength on his demo. He was an instant hit so Twist promoter Steve Darragh gave him a coveted weekly residency. And it was a great move as there are very few who have ventured to see him at the popular Sunday morning party that aren’t immediately smitten by his fabulously filthy-electro sound.
But apart from being very talented Tommy is also a very driven and ambitious individual, who now wants to shake up for the electro scene with a new night which he hopes will break new ground.
Launched on May 07th ‘Kosmetic Surgery’ will be the first night on the already established London electro scene to run till 6am in the morning. Billed as presenting the very best “Cutting-Electro House” the night has already received incredible interest from industry, journalists and clubbers who are turned on by the fact he offers something just a little bit different.
I had a quick chat with the talented teenager to find out a little bit more about Kosmetic Surgery, music and what it’s like to be Tommy Four Seven.
You've had a great year.What's your secret?
I wouldn't say I have a secret. I like to fuse many genres and so being eclectic when choosing records has helped to form a more unique sound. There are factors, which have helped. Playing at Twist, a weekly party, has allowed me to develop a unique sound to a wide and open-minded audience. It has also given me the experience, which I think some up and coming DJs lack, especially when getting the balance right with regards to reading the crowd and taking them on a journey.
I am fortunate enough to be a part of some great residencies with some great DJs. My first residency, Kurruption, is going from strength to strength now with the launch of my co-promoted party Kosmetic Surgery I can actually get a whole bunch of DJs and producers I'm really into and play them out.
I think for a DJ staring out it is very important to gain residencies to build your experience, and hopefully a following.

What kind of night is Kosmetic Surgery?
Kosmetic Surgery is London’s first electro night to be open all night long. Providing two rooms of music the main arch will be home to cutting-electro house, while the smaller room two will be home to new-wave synth-pop and electro-clash.
The idea came about from Twist. It made me realise how many people were inspired by this music. I also realized there weren’t many parties that played my sound that were open till 6am in the morning. Kosmetic Surgery fills this gap.
So why the name?
The name came about as we wanted to say a few different things.
First of all, Kosmetic Surgery is looking to make a change on the already very established London electro scene. We wanted to provide an open-minded polysexual atmosphere where people can dress up or dress down,
We also want to create an environment which allows artists to express themselves so they can push musical boundaries.
Who will come to Kosmetic Surgery?
We have a polysexual door policy so hopefully it will be 600 open-minded party people. We want people to leave their inhibitions and preconceptions at the door and come with the intention of having lots of fun. We hoping it will appeal to lots of different people who just want to come together for a fabulous celebration of fun, dressing-up and above all fantastic music.
Tell us about Jacks for those that haven't been
Jacks is a 600 capacity club which is comprised of two rooms. The main room is a big arch, while the second room is a more intimate affair. It’s also lovely and clean and serves drinks at bar prices.
When we were looking for a venue we walked in and immediately knew it was the right venue for us. It’s also hidden down a side-street so you know everyone who turns up has the intention of being there, which is exactly our intention.
Tell us about the DJs you’re booking?
Adam Sky has an amazing past and is one the biggest names in electro so we were incredibly happy to find out he was available to for May 07th. Many of you on HF know him as Adamski who produced the amazing 1990 track ‘Killer’.
We also have King Roc who’s mixed everything from Chicken Lips to Marc Almond. He’s also an fabulous DJ. The Synthetic Pleasures are just awesome and I can’t wait to DJ alongside them as they have amazing lyrics and basslines.Sub:tracktor is a very good warm-up DJ. It’s important to get the right warm-up as it sets the tone for the whole night.
The 2nd room is overseen by Ya Mam & Ya Dad who are known in the scene over for their outlandish behaviour. Finally there’s Jonty Skufff, who as well as editing the best music fanzine is also the rising star of new-wave synth pop and has played all the best electro parties across Europe.
You've also been doing quite a lot of productions. Tell us about those and will they be released?
As well as my solo productions I am currently writing with Alex Parsons, a great friend and very talented DJ and producer. Under the guise of 'Manakin' we are experimenting with many genres. Our first, 'Chocolate Makes Your Clothes Shrink' is a dirty electro house number with a devastating bass and quirky vocal. This is set to be released on Kosmetic Surgery this summer following a solo production from myself. 'Go Ahead' is a more main room electro house track, with an 80s vibe on the synths. It’s a sound I love, it has a more uplifting feel.
How do you describe your sound?
Electro house, electro tech, ranging from deep and dirty to tough and uplifting. Some artists doing it for me right now are Trentmoller, Ivan Smagge, Ewan Pearson, King Roc, Adam Sky, FC Kahuna and Luke Slater.

The electro scene has always been seen a very style conscious genre. Do you agree?
Yes and no. Like most cutting edge sounds its been championed by gay/mixed nights. In the outset, nights like Nag Nag Nag, The Cock and the now defunct Golf Sale have helped bring the sound to life. Electro is biggest in the East end these days, but what with very restrictive licences all the parties finish at 3am. Kosmetic Surgery is in London Bridge and we will be rocking till 6am (and maybe a bit more). The sound is huge in France and Germany, but has yet to really kick off big time here. 2005 will see that change. We aim to build a club with attitude, not where fashion dictates entry.
