Living the Dream with Gavyn Mytchel

Reported by timmyd9 / Submitted 06-04-05 09:57

There is a huge amount of unwarranted hyperbole in the world of dance music. True success is sought by the many, but achieved by the few. True success is hard to define, but for some it is quite clearly apparent. Heirs apparent come and fall, but a few establish a foothold and continue to climb. This isn't just an interview with a DJ celebrating a big gig, a new tune being released. This guy's biography is quickly starting to read like the A-Z of "What to achieve in dance music".... and he's only 26. It's criminal....

A quick synopsis of the case for the prosecution:

Exhibit A - Resident DJ for one of the country's most established and highly respected club nights
Exhibit B - Host of one of the most respected radio shows in the UK
Exhibit C - Mixmag Future Hero
Exhibit D - Signed to one of the biggest record labels in the world
Exhibit E - Managed by one of the UK's highest profile DJ agencies
Exhibit F - In his first 15 months of production all five of his original tracks and four remixes have been signed to major labels.

Gavyn Mytchel's rise to prominence is little short of meteoric. While many start going through their first mid mid-life crisis, he is grabbing the world by the scruff of the neck and living every day as if it's his last. This ascendency has been propelled by his highly successful residency at The Gallery at Turnmills, London. The night is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month and you would be hard pressed to think of any other club night in the UK who can consistently bring together the most highly respected new and established worldwide talent in dance music on a weekly basis. With five events of celebration in April 2005 this promises to be one hugely decadent journey into sound.

On the back of this residency Gavyn's diary is filling up fast with dates in LA, Milan, Sweden, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Belgium as well as UK gigs at Passion, Promise, the Honey Club, Serious @ The Cross and Coach in Northern Ireland.

This shooting star is, however, no closely guarded secret. His potential was formally recognised by Mixmag when they tipped him as one of their 'Future Heroes' and yet further when he was signed to the the MostWanted DJ agency joining the ranks of Marco V, John 00 Fleming and Cor Fijneman.

Impressed?? Read on.....

Refusing to rest on his laurels Gavyn has forced further critical acclaim for his productions under the pyseudonim 'Mnemonic. The first track, 'Insurrection' was snapped up by Captivating Sounds, an off-shoot of Armin Van Burren's Armada record label.

The follow up was 'Forbidden', tech-trance at its finest and an epitomy of what has been so embraced by the clubbers at Turnmills and worldwide. Duty Free Records didn't need to be asked twice and after just one play it was signed to their sister label 'Intensive' and released in February 2004 with a remix from rising stars, Smith & Pledger. Formidable support from Ferry Corsten, Tall Paul, Eddie Haliwell and the Thrillseekers says it all.

His Vortex EP stormed onto dancefloors in August 2004 and others have sought his midas touch with requests for remixes of their tunes. The first two lucky recipients were artists Albert Vorne and Durango 95 with released in the tale end of 2004 and further remixes have followed in 2005 with Zirenz's 'Utophia' and Stowers & Young's '2nd Coming'. The fifth release, 'Vocoder' is out on Noys Music in April featuring a remix from trance legend Mike Koglin and a collaboration with John Askew is set to be unleashed shortly.

Not content with this success alone Gavyn is also making huge inroads into the airwaves presenting his own fortnightly 'Gallery Show' on Ministry of Sound Radio and providing widely acclaimed mixes for Fergie's Radio 1 show and John Askew's Kiss FM show. There will also be a forthcoming mix on Paul Kershaw's Galaxy Show later this year.

The case for the prosecution rests. I was lucky to be able to catch up with Gavyn and plunder his thoughts......

1. Tell us something that very few people know about Gavyn Mytchel.

I like to walk everywhere, I hate waiting for buses, tubes, trains, taxis. I once walked from Wimbledon to Old Street, I kind of like to plan my career while i'm walking.

2. How did you first become involved with Turnmills and The Gallery in particular?

Working for no money for about 9 weeks packing flyers etc... Quite a clever trick to get my foot in the door, I have seen other people who have tried to make it but have ended up blowing it by asking for money or soon as they start they ask for a dj gig within the first 3 days.

3. In times where big name clubs continue to struggle, why do you feel The Gallery has continued to be so successful?

We have a very clued up team working there, it's about knowing what's happening and being the first to get there before the rest follow.

4. If you weren't promoting/producing and DJing you would be doing.....?

Male Escort, what better way to make money!!!

5. What has been the highlight of your DJ/production career so far?

Signing to Mostwanted DJ Agency and signing to Armin's Armada Record Label, or playing on Radio One for Fergie's Future Hero Show.

6. You were named as one of Mixmag's Future Heroes in 2003. Who do you predict as your stars of the future?

Tim Davison, Ehren Stowers, Dan Galbally are my latest heroes but the ones who are on course to make it big are John Askew and Adam Sheridan.

7. As Gallery celebrates a decade of dance what were you doing ten years ago?

I was 16 just leaving school not knowing what i was gonna be doing then let alone now.

8. How did you first become involved with Ministry of Sound Radio?

I met Rob Sharp, the station manager, in 2002. I think it was December time and he said he was looking to get some other clubs involved with the station. He asked me to get a programme in place which took me a month to plan out and get sorted. My first ever show was March 2003, with special guest Jon O'Bir.

9. If you knew back when you were starting out what you know now about the industry would you have done anything differently?

Not really. I'm quite happy with how things are turning out, there have been a few idiots I have met along the way but I just don't associate myself with them.

10. What can we expect to hear for the 10th birthday celebrations?

Five of the most outrageous Friday line ups that anyone will ever see in London.

11. With every one of your first five tracks and first three remixes produced in the first 15 months being signed......how the hell do you top that??!

I just want to keep going, I have my latest track 'Vocoder' out this month on Noys (Mike Koglin's label ). I'm working on loads more tracks throughout Spring. I'm also doing a remix for The Flash Brothers, which is sounding very cool and I just feel I have to keep getting them signed rather than wait for my first knock back.

12. Who has most shaped the person you are today?

I have pretty much done this myself, I have 3 people I have been impressed by, Danny Newman with his energy, Sasha with ability to stay at the forefront of the industry and keep pushing new boundries and Judge Jules for being my overall hero from when I started out clubbing back in 1997.

13. Where do you stand on the debate of DJs now playing out using laptops and software such as Ableton?

I think it's interesting that there are new pieces of technology entering the club scene. Remember when djs started using cds — they got slated, but now have been accepted. It's about pushing forward!

14. If your friends were asked to describe you in 3 words which do you think they would use?

'Confident', 'Charmer' & '007'.

More: Tim Davison plays the warm-up slot this month for the last time at sub (Logic). Tim's been honing his warm-up skills at the Heat DJ competition, reaching the final for a set in the main room at Pacha. Talking of main rooms, not content with ripping it up before James Zabiela in March, it's no surprise that he has been asked back to get the Turnmills main room moist with excitement again in July. Tim also plays Phazed Out at The Edge in Nottingham and It Would Be Rude Not To at Essence this month.

Oliver Leighs takes things up a notch with some melodic trance. Ollie plays at Peach Goes Hard on April 2nd, injecting some classic trance into proceedings. Ollie also has a massive booking in July, closing for The Gallery in the main room of Turnmills. Ollie's been cranking out some serious production work of late, and has a new track with Ian Betts (under the guise of Ayana) - 'Shimmer' to be released on Ian's spanking new label 6:30 records, as well as Ollie's mix of Six Thirty's Nightrider to be released in September 2005.

It's great to welcome back Gavyn Mytchel to becomeone after some great sets at sub (Logic) and The Soundshaft for our first birthday. In case you didn't know (where have you been?) Gavyn is a resident at The Gallery – one of the longest running and most successful club nights in London. Gavyn hosts his own show on Ministry of Sound radio and is also a MixMag Future Hero. On the production side of things, Gavyn’s been tearing up dancefloors with his monster tech-trance tune 'Forbidden', a favourite of Ferry Corsten, Tall Paul, Eddie Halliwell and Thrillseekers. He has also been in the studio this month with fellow Gallery resident John Askew carving out some new production.

Finally we have the headliner for our 3rd birthday, Adam White, who is currently making a major splash as resident at London's favourite trance party Knowhere. He has graced the decks at Ministry of Sound, Turnmills, Bora Bora, Heaven and most recently Eden in Ibiza where he played alongside Dave Pearce for the whole summer. His new single 'Ballerina' (ably choreographed at Knowhere by becomeone's very own ballerina Megan) was Armin Van Buuren's 'Record Of The Week' on his 'A State Of Trance Radio Show' recently. During his time performing, Adam (previously known as TheManAdam) has played alongside various highly acclaimed DJs such as Judge Jules, Brandon Block & Alex P, Eric Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Dave Pearce and the legendary Paul Oakenfold. Catch him whilst you still can at an intimate venue!

Get your names into the guest list now for £5 entry all day by emailing names to guestlist@becomeone.co.uk.

See you all there!
