Leeds' New Breed

Reported by Ben Cooper / Submitted 30-03-05 23:15

No doubt many of you reading this will have shunned your usual clubs this weekend in favour of a Welsh holiday camp for the 7th instalment of the tidy weekender. Those of us ‘oop north’ without the funds, time off work, or who were simply too weekender-weary to make it, were left with few options for a night’s clubbing. Thank goodness then that New Breed’s promoters had also decided to stay at home and picked Saturday to hold the opening event of their night in Leeds.

A joint venture from Manchester promoters Toast, and Leeds hard dance veterans Housewive's Choice, New Breed is, you guessed it, a new talent night. The idea’s simple: assemble some of the region’s most promising new up and coming DJs and tour the North, providing a show case for the future for the scene, and giving clubbers a taste of things to come.

It would be hard to imagine a bigger contrast between New Breed and the tidy weekender; Wales vs England, established superstar DJs vs the stars of the future, … and huge tidy arenas vs the diminutive Stinky’s Peephouse – regular home of Housewive's Choice and infamous Leeds after-party venue.

Despite boasting three rooms on three separate floors the venue will only hold about 400 clubbers. No big green lasers here – think more ‘front room’ than ‘main room’ – and while the origin of the rest of the club’s name remains a mystery, it’s easy to see where the ‘house’ part comes from. Having said that, it’s not a bad venue; dark, but not filthy, and perfect if you like smaller, more intimate clubs.

A bouncy/trance room upstairs and a ground level house room complete with heated outside terrace sandwiched the main hard room. Big thanks to Toast who organised the DJs and spared us the night-long tirade of funky house so often on offer as an alternative to the hard stuff. We loved the mish mash of house, breaks, and electro. As with the main room, rising new DJs manned the decks for the night. Toast promoter – Pete Carvell –ditched his hard tunes (along with some famously unpredictable mixing) in favour of a bag of electro-house, which had people shaking it all over the dance floor from the off. With standout house and breaks sets courtesy of Paul Flintoff, Hilfingers, and Caroline Banx (also having a rest from hard house) among others, it was unsurprising the room remained packed to the end of the night.

The hard room definitely didn’t disappoint either and true to the billing really did ‘provide the best of the North’s new talent’. So often used to excuse sub standard line-ups and amateur promotions, a quick glance at the line-up marked New Breed out as different.

Toast, who previously picked up Ben Stevens and Andy Whitby as residents long before they were signed to Tidy, brought co-promoter and possibly Manchester’s hottest hard dance prospect Morgan over to join Promise Resident Mark Maitland, and local favourites Chris Impact and Sam Townend. With quality production work under their belts and a growing reputation as top notch DJs, New Breed can quite truthfully apply the word ‘talent’ to these guys.

Save a disappointingly soulless end of night thump-a-thon and enjoyable if unremarkable B2B stint by Matt Pickup and Stuart M, heavy, techno-influenced bass lines combined with rapid, high pitched percussion ruled on the night, reflecting the growth of the new ‘techy’ sound in hard house. Sets from Morgan, Sam Townend, and Chris Impact stood out as particularly impressive.

Following a storming PA at Incision last week, Chris managed to mix equal quantities of filth and tech into his DJ set and Morgan had the room rocking from start to finish. Steering the crowd to a floor-shaking stomp with his usual cheeky charisma he crammed an original selection of sounds – from full blown techno to some pounding hard beats given a funky twist into his top notch hour and a half behind the decks.

The bounce/ trance room option upstairs proved suspiciously popular, especially for a night geared towards newer sounds, but provided welcome familiar territory for those that wanted to escape the raw beats in the main room in favour of something with a bit more melody.

The club was kept fairly busy all night, and filled with a generally sound and up for it crowd. Despite the fierce competition for punters from the tidy weekender, New Breed’s opening night was a real success and like its DJs, the night holds great promise for the future… Manchester get ready for the next one!

Looking forward to playing in the house room for Housewive's Choice in the summer... the idea of a really intimate small crowd inside a small club packed to the rafters beats a half empty massive club any day of the week!!
