Divine – The launch preview with promoter and dj Paul Divine!

Paul Divine is one of London’s hottest rising stars. Likened to Steve Hill meets the Tidy Boys, Paul has secured himself top gigs amongst the biggest names in Hard Dance. As well as Dj’ing he’s also no stranger to the world of promoting being one of the three minds behind the massive No Limits. I caught up with Paul to talk to him about his latest venture, ingeniously titled ‘Divine’ at Deep Blue on March the 19th to see what we can expect from the ambassador of bounce!
So tell us a little bit about yourself! Where you from?
Well I’m from Blackpool originally but am living in London now. I moved up here four years ago to study Audio Engineering and had so much fun decided to stay here when my course finished! I don’t think I could ever move back to Blackpool and endure any more nights of dodgy Will Young dance remixes in clubs that close at 2am after the London clubbing lifestyle! People that have heard me play out will know I’m a big fan of cheesy bouncy house but the Blackpool clubbing scene is just plain wrong!
How’s 2005 started for you?
2005 has started really well for me actually! Have already played some great gigs, my favourite so far being Peach goes Hard at the Scala where I was back to back with Seany Sean and Frantic brings you More back to back with Rob Kane which was a very busy one!
You’ve played at some wicked events like Frantic vs. Wildchild, HHA, Skwosh and many others. How did you get into Dj’ing and where would you like to see it take you?
When I was about 13 at school back in Blackpool I had a major crush on this girl in my class and I knew she liked Dj’ing and all that type of stuff. I decided to try to impress her by making a mix tape, corny I know! (I think it contained some wicked tracks like Living Joy’s Dreamer and the Macarena!)
When I moved down to London I sent a demo to Piers at Milk and he gave me my first set out. He was really helpful and introduced me to lots of promoters and passed on my CD’s to them and from that got more gigs. Also No Limits was a great platform for me to play to a wider audience. Dickon came down to I think our fourth event at the Fridge and enjoyed my set and spoke to me afterwards and from that booked me for the Frantic Christmas ball, main room at Camden Palace. That was a really scary set! First of all I was all flustered as I arrived at 9.58 due to me being a plum and not calculating tube times properly, and secondly as I had Will stood there next to Paul Glazby while I was mixing so I didn’t want to fuck any mixes up! The room was packed though after 20 mins and I got into and played one of my best sets out!
With the whole Dj’ing thing though I just love what I’m doing at the moment. It’s great no matter where I’m playing and feel very lucky that I do get to play some wicked events and venues! Hopefully it’ll continue!
You mentioned No Limits. What’s happening with that now? We’ve not seen much of the event since your first Birthday last year, have you called it a day or are you just taking a break from it?
I suppose it’s just on a vacation at the moment. Helen had a little bambino last year and Kev and I both started new jobs and found it hard to fit in time to do the party and give it the attention that it needed to be a success. We’d always vowed to make the party as diverse and unique as we could and towards the last few events it felt like we were just getting into a routine and not making each party stand out. We all needed a break from it to spend more time enjoying clubbing and forming new ideas, which we could bring to the event. No Limits will be back though with a bit of a face-lift in the not too distant future!
What do you think of the clubbing scene at the moment?
Musically I think it’s wicked! I don’t know if anyone else has found this but I’d go through a stage of about 5 months when your looking for tunes to buy and there is just nothing that does it for you, recently though however there have been so many choons that have made me run out the next day to buy them and it hasn’t been like that for me for a while so I’m happy about that!
What are your favourite tracks at the moment?
People will hate me for saying this but I kind of do actually like the Vicky Pollard – Yeahbutnobut track… although I can see that it will get completely over played and get on everyone’s tits. It’s funny though and makes me laugh! Also the Pulser - Cloudwalking remix is great! I love the original.
You’ve only just turned 20; do you think you know what it takes to promote a party?
Honestly – not really! Not when it comes to the finical side of it anyway but I’m not doing it to make money. I think with the way that the whole clubbing scene is at the moment anyone who starts a party to make money is kidding themselves. I think though being quite young is a good thing cos my main goal is to have as much fun as I possibly can and I want my night to show that.
So tell us a bit about Divine then – what do you have planned for us?
Well ‘Divine’ is my completely self-indulgent night of happy uplifting tunes and full on stupidness! I really wanted the chance to throw the sort of party that I would want to go to and book the Dj’s that I wanted to hear. Hopefully there will be other people who have the same tastes in music and clubbing as I do and will enjoy the night!
I’ve got some great things planned for the night – all the usual bits like cds, vinyl, free tickets for other events and some really fantastic club performers and some pretty random bits too. I’ve put a very random order into a fancy dress shop today! However I’m not going to tell you what they are you’ll just have to come along and see for yourself! Doing No Limits was a wicked experience for coming up with stupid ideas – as we did that a lot, like the Inspector Gadget intro we did, which will always be my No Limits moment!
There’s lots of fantastic (and a little bit mental) people helping me out with the night that I couldn’t do it without so ‘big up’ to all of them! They know who they are!
Who are you looking forward to see play?
Well everyone! Like I said the whole night is a chance for me to have all the djs I’m into at the moment in one place. In particular I’m looking forward to Rachel Auburn. She’s playing a lot of international gigs now and haven’t seen her in London for a while! I love her energy and she’s really knows how to get the crowd going! She is the undisputed Queen of Bounce! Wid & Ben of course as I haven’t actually heard them live yet!
Also I’m really excited about my good buddy Alan, AKA Seventh Heaven, AKA Solus, AKA The Gimp’s live PA – his production work is fantastic and I know that this year he’s going to go from strength to strength! He’s definitely someone to watch out for!
What will you be playing for us at Divine to make us bounce then?
Well I do play a lot of classic anthems so I’m sure that they’re will be a good few of them!
Is their anything else you’d like to add?
