Tribute to DJ Matt Jay 1973 – 2005

DJ Matt Jay sadly passed away on Saturday 12th February 2005. He was a passionate DJ and clubber and known by all that met him as a genuinely friendly person – always smiling. Matt started DJing in 1995 and quickly built up a big fan base in Essex. He played trance, but also had a love for classic house. In a short space of time, he found himself regularly DJing at clubs all over Essex (such Berwick Manor, Ghost, Divine, The Southport Weekend). Matt was also starting to make a mark in London: he played regularly for Raindance, one of the UK’s most successful old-school promotions, and also guested at Seduction and Legends.
Matt was loyally supported by his friends: when he DJ’d for Insomnia at Camden Palace two of his friends flew back from their holiday in Portugal to support him for the night, flying out the next day for the rest of their holiday. A close friend of Matt’s said, “He had a definite talent for reading the crowd and playing the right tune at the right moment – sending rushes over my body and making the hair stand up on the back of my neck.” In fact, it was at the time that Matt was about to make his debut at Ministry of Sound that he was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in his airway. Following major surgery, Matt was told he would never be able to set foot inside a smokey atmosphere.
I expect it’s a pretty safe bet to say that if you visit Harderfaster, then clubbing and dance music is a huge part of your life (and that could be an understatement for some of us!). So imagine if you suddenly had to stop. For Matt, at a time when his DJing career was really starting to take off, suddenly going to any clubs - whether to DJ or just to have a dance with his mates and enjoy the music - was out of the question. Matt was only ever a light smoker and believed that DJing in clubs with such a smoky environment breathing in other people’s smoke was a major contributing factor to his illness. Do you remember Roy Castle (the famous trumpeting frontman of the Guinness Book of Records,) who died from lung cancer? He used to play his trumpet in clubs all over the UK. It was thought that taking in massive gulps of smoky air (and playing a wind instrument/singing etc you need to take the breath right to the depths of your diaphragm) on such a regular basis would have been a major contributing factor to his cancer.
Matt was treated at Southend’s head and neck cancer unit and after undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy given the all-clear in July 2004, though he could never endanger his life by entering a smoky environment again. But Matt refused to give in and pioneered Essex’s first (and only to date) no-smoking club. Matt, supported by his friends, put in a staggering amount of time and effort to make Airwave, Essex’s first and only non-smoking club night, a success. Yet, in August 2004, shortly after the launch of Airwave, Matt was diagnosed with terminal cancer in his liver.
Despite this Matt selflessly wanted to continue with Airwave. To date, more than £3,000 has been raised, with all the funds going directly to the Southend Hospital Head and Neck Cancer Unit (PCFK) and also to the Alan J Learner Fund, which funds research into small cell cancer. Airwave is leading the way in the promotion of a safer healthier club night by raising awareness to the dangers of smoking/passive smoking at the same time as having fun. Everyone involved has donated their time and services for free and the night is receiving huge support, with DJs such as Graham Gold, Adam White, Ian Betts, Anthony Dean and Billy Bunter giving up their time for free to come and DJ at Airwave.
It was always Matt’s wish that Airwave should continue, not only to raise funds for the PCFK and small cell cancer research, but also to show people that a great night out can be had without smoking. The next Airwave is on 19th March and will now also be a chance for everyone to say goodbye to Matt in one of the environments he loved most. Matt’s last DJ set was at Airwave in January where he played a set of really uplifting trance and it was clear from the massive grin he sported that he was really enjoying it. At Matt’s funeral the church was totally full and 100 people stood outside in the cold to pay their respects to Matt. This is testament to the exceptional person he was – always laughing, smiling, joking and thinking about other people.
Matt showed amazing courage and was an inspiration to all the people he met. In facing an ultimately fatal battle with cancer he managed to create something amazingly positive. Sadly I think that cancer touches us all in some way or other and the funds from Airwave will have made immeasurable difference to people’s lives and will, with the support of his friends and clubbers, continue to do so. Matt will be greatly missed by his family and all his friends.

AIRWAVE 'a breath of fresh air for clubbers'
Essex's first and only NO SMOKING dance event
Sadly DJ Matt Jay passed away on 12th February 2005 having battled with cancer in his airway and terminal cancer of the liver.
In August 2004 Matt launched AIRWAVE to raise funds for the Southend Hospital Head and Neck Cancer Unit (PCFK) and research into small cell cancer at the same time as creating an awareness to the dangers of smoking and passive smoking, while having a good time.
Airwave is Matt's legacy which we on his behalf will continue to promote a safer, healthier club night for all. Join us in making this a very special Airwave and to pay your respects to a truely remarkable person.
This is a non profit event with those involved donating their time and services for free. All money raised goes to PCFK and Small Cell Research.
There is a terrace with heat lamps for smokers and nicotine gum available on the night.

Oh goodness I hadnt heard this news until now! That is really truly sad. He was an inspiration to us all and I hope aiwave goes from strength to strength and spreads into london. Id def support a no smoking clubbing venue.

I've unfortunately never met Matt, but greatly admire the man for his courage & determination. May the club continue to thrive in his memory. It's now time for other clubs to take note & think about introducing a no smoking policy.

Over the past year Matt has made an impact on so many lives that he has to be one of the most remarkable people I have every met. He showed courage and determination beyond belief and still thought about everyone else before himself. I was so lucky to have been a part of Matt's life and am truely honoured to be able to continue making some of his dreams come true. He is missed so much that there are so many reason's to Airwave.
Until the no smoking laws are in Airwave will continue to lead the way in the promotion of a safer healthier club night hopefully venturing into London in the near future.
Thank you to everyone for your support. May Matt's legacy live on!

Some people are really given the short straw in life. He seems to have bought new health conscious ideas to the club scene and that itself is something almost unheard of...Hopefully his legacy will live on.
