TWISTED Foam Party Preview: Interview with Marcos

Marcos...aka Mark Dearden, is one name on the lips of many a music fan of late. Under his Euphonic guise, he has concentrated on the more uplifting and lighter "pure" trance sound, such as his well known trance classic "Sahara" released in 2001.Marcos releases, on the other hand, feature that trade mark techie hard edged and full bass driven sound whilstMuzikman, his third guise is used for a more experimental sound.
With a style ranging from driving hard trance to uplifting euphoric anthems, Marcos is very much a DJs producer, and has work has found its way on the compilations of from all the big guns in the business including Gatecrasher Resident Transmissions & DJ Scot Projects latest effort on Overdose.
Very much leading the Nu-School of producers, we managed to drag him out of the studio for a few precious moments to find out more about the man, as he prepares for his 2 hour set at Twisted @ the Fridge on August 7th....
First of all Marcos, what’s with the name "Marcos?"
Quite simple really, I was given the nickname 'Marcos' by a guy I met at college, Token Dave as we call him. I had just come back from holiday in Florida and was very tanned. He thought I looked Spanish and instead of calling me Mark called me Marcos. It stuck.
The last 2 years has seen you’re status rise at a meteoric rate from bedroom producer to status as a highly respected and sought after remixer/producer...how did all this come about for you?
When I was at school John (JK Walker) introduced me to a simple sample tracker program on the Amiga. We used it to make simple tracks, learning construction, sampling etc. We gradually built up a studio together and started sending out demos to people. Several years later we met Steve Knight (Steve K, Digital Pressure) who passed our demo on to Keiran at Alphamagic. He must have liked it coz' he signed us up straight away. It’s really just grown from there.
You’ve done a lot of studio time with Jay Walker; tell us a bit about why you like working with him, and what you get out of it:
Well, we were mates from school and have worked with each other from the start and now share a studio. We really just have a similar outlook on most things, be it musical, political, whatever. Although we have individual styles of track writing, we share the same opinion on what is good and what is not, so its beneficial from the point of view that we let each other know whether what we're doing is good or not. We also have huge competition between us and that works well as we are always trying to go that little bit better. The competition has a very positive effect on our music.
Your pseudonym "Euphonic" represents perhaps the lighter, "pure trance" side of you’re work. Tell us a bit about why you’ve chosen to use more than one production name:
Really because I like to vary what I do. I enjoy writing 'pure' trance just as much as the rest but I feel that it works best by having a different name for different styles so that people know what to expect.
I think successful producers have one key tune that kicks things off for them...what was yours and where did the idea come from?
I suppose the one that kicked it off would be the first one I released which was Euphonic - 'Sahara'. That track was being played a lot by the top DJ's and just made people take notice and enabled me to build off the back of it, including a remix of Dumonde's 'God Music' as well.
The idea for it came from the main melody. I was playing with different sounds and came out with the riff and the rest of the track just came out. I think the best tracks are the ones that you don't struggle with, they almost write themselves.
Tell us a bit about you’re studio...are you mostly playing with soft synths or are you a firm favourite of the hands on hardware old school?
I'm in between; I like to have the best of both worlds! I think there are great things you can do with Audio tracks these days. I usually write something using the hardware synths, then record them in as audio tracks so that I can manipulate them in ways that are otherwise impossible. Soft Synths are coming along and there are some great sounding ones out there, but few match the level of a Virus C for example. I like to get physical with a piece of kit when I'm creating a sound as well; it’s not quite the same with a mouse.
Out of all the many tunes you’ve released...have you got a personal favourite?
Hmm, I often love a track when I've just written it but then pick holes in it a few weeks later, noticing areas to improve/change etc. I suppose I have a few favourites which include Sahara, Asia and recently Cosmicstring.
Whom do you look to for inspiration? Are there certain tunes out there at the moment that you listen to and think, "How the hell did they do that?"
For inspiration, which for me is the key to writing a good track, I will sit in the studio and just pull records out of my bag and off the shelves. I'll listen to them and see what kind of sound inspires me at that moment. I also get lots of ideas when I’m out; I'll see what the crowd likes and what sounds good being banged out.
If you had the chance, whom would you most like to work with?
Tiesto! Need I say more? I also love Signum and what they do and hope to get them to do a remix for me at some point.
Who do you think is the Next Big Thing out there....production ways?
I've become friendly with 'Outback' from Holland. They write tracks that have everything that I look for, trancey melodic sounds, techy effects and a strong bass end. I was chuffed when they agreed to remix mine and John's 'Nightfinder' recently and it’s been a favourite of mine ever since. They are only young like me so we are all just starting out and hopefully will go right to the top. In my opinion there are few better than them.
What about behind the decks? Tell us a bit about where you have been playing recently?
I've recently played a few times up in Scotland which were fun and met some great people, and have several dates in London coming up. I also have bookings for Escape in Swansea and one at Gatecrasher at the end of August which I am really looking forward to. I also do a monthly mix for TranceAirwaves.com so check that out for tracks fresh out of the studio!

Any words of advice for aspiring DJ/Producers out there?
Never give up, it takes time and perseverance believe me! Most of all you have to really love what you do, there are lots of setbacks and disappointments so you have to have a strong commitment if you're going to make it. I would say that you need to be individual as well, not too much as people will be scared to take a chance but enough to make you stand out from the crowd.
Finally, what have you got in store for us in you’re 2 hour set at Twisted on August 7th?
Lots of new bits from myself and John, plus some big tunes from my box that are doing it for me at the moment.
