Oh Lordy, it's Fordy: the return of the Loony Magnet !

Reported by spacekitten / Submitted 27-04-04 12:58

For many in the underground hard dance scene DJ Fordy needs no introduction. Undeniably one of the bounciest DJs in the world, he has played many of London’s underground parties and driven audiences crazy all over the world. Now, some of London’s finest are flocking to join him on his Tube Radio show in May, including Tin Tin, Shaf De Bass, Chris C, Matt Clarke, Dan Madams, Marc Johnson & Mark Ashley. Is this another case of the Loony Magnet at work, the ‘Have a Word’ Hotline in overdrive or is something else at play … Spacekitten put some questions to Fordy to try and understand the man behind the bounce…

How long have you been DJing and what was the first party you played out at ?

DJing?? Around 15 years; I used to play indie & alternative stuff… “Proper” DJing though, i.e mixing and dance music, 10 years now.

The first proper dance party was Spooky, a fantastic legendary South Coast underground party production crew, back in about ‘95. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who remember those parties with very fond memories….if they remember anything at all !

Who inspires you in the dance scene ?

Not so much ‘who’ - the biggest inspiration for me comes from seeing people enjoying themselves on the dance floor and jumping up and down wildly. To me the important thing is remembering that it’s a party. One promoter even received an email from a very happy clubber in Israel proclaiming: “Fordy is God!” Hearing things like that is what really gets me going.

You play everything from psychedelic trance to hard trance, acid, NRG, techno and hard house. Do you have a preference for one style over another ?

I've always tried to mix things up a bit regardless of supposed 'genre'. It's funny, I used to get told off for playing acid techno in trance / hard house clubs: "Don't play too hard" and now the likes of Andy Farley and Nick Sentience are praised for adding a bit of techno. I like lots of different stuff, it's all good, as long as it ROCKS! That's usually the main criteria: Does it rock?

What can people expect from one of your sets - is there a unique Fordy style ?

Expect plenty of energy and OOMPH! It’s the kind of music that gets under your skin and gets you jumping around like a loony holding your brains in! It's music which makes you feel like you've got a rocket up your arse - u just can't sit still - you've GOT to dance. It’s the loony magnet at work !!

When people think of you they do often think ‘Loony’ and you named your first CD release last year, Loony Magnet. What’s the deal ?

Lots of my friends are pretty crazy…And when I used to work in a record shop all the loonies seemed to be mysteriously attracted to me, refusing other people’s offers to serve them and preferring to wait for me.

The music I play sends people crazy too. So I decided that "Loony Magnet" would be an appropriate title for my album. My #1 fan, DJ Sir Man (Andy) made a giant horseshoe-shaped Loony Magnet and would run around wielding it at my gigs. It really works! It doesn't just attract loonies it also turns people into loonies!

What's the most unusual thing anyone's said to you after a set?

After I'd played a mad marathon six hour set at a bush doof in Australia someone said to me: "Did you go to the toilet at all during that?"

I’ve also had someone come up to me and say she had such a great time she danced her tits off! I guess that’s a good thing !!

You spent much of last year in India and Australia. What were some of the more memorable highlights and experiences of the trip for you ?

Someone in Sydney saying, "I love THIS tune, what's this?" (the only such question of the night) and it was "Cained", a monster tune made by me and Group 185 Smile

People being very pleased to have me back in Australia again but also having the opportunity of corrupting new ears with music they've never heard before.

I absolutely loved the outdoor parties, particularly in Goa.

One funny experience I remember was having the police turn up halfway through a banging set at a bush doof in Australia, demanding the music stop and offering to take me down to the station. “er... no thank-you Orifficer!”

Oh, and finding a club in Fiji with a "No Flip-flops" rule !

Describe your ideal dance party …. I bet it would be outdoors…

Definitely. it would have to be outdoors (God / Allah / Colin / whatever you want to call him / her has the best backdrops and lightshow!) preferably on a beach with a big bad sound system with funky colourful, fun, fluffy people.

You’ve previously released a track, “Mash up the Town” with DJ Riksta and released your first CD album Loony Magnet last year. What other collaborations have you worked on and are there any future collaborations or releases planned ?

Yeah, “Mash Up The Town” (on Passion Records in 2002) was awarded four stars by DJ magazine which was pretty exciting !

I’ve also worked with Group 185 on two tracks, “Cained” and “Ruff as Fuck” and a new one, “Gandhi's Goat", with Amethyst.

Many of my favourite producers will be guesting on my radio show, so I'm going to be extra nice to them. You never know what may happen???? I would LOVE to make a track with Dynamic Intervention & Acid Ted.

As for the future. it’s unwritten tho my track "Mixamatosis" should finally be released as a single on Akid Traxx soon.

You’re about to start a four week stint on Tube Radio and you’ve managed to build an impressive list of guests so far with more to be confirmed…

Yeah it’s great isn’t it ! I’ve got some of the top DJs and producers in (see the list at the end of this interview) to play some top quality hard dance music.

I've met many DJs / producers and made many friends through Tube. Most DJs are MORE than willing to come do a spot. It's really nice to be able to invite all your favourites your mates into the studio to play some great music, we have a lot of fun during the shows !

My show, which is called Energise, will feature the finest hard underground party music (psychedelic trance, hard trance, hardhouse, hard dance, techno, NRG, hardcore & freeform). This music NEVER gets played on the (regular) radio !

But REMEMBER we're only on for 4 weeks, so make the most of it (you'll miss it when it's gone!)

What is Tube Radio and how did you get involved ?

Tube Radio was started by the Radio Society at TVU & London College of Music & Media by students & lecturers, all voluntary.

It’s a community station, playing all sorts of stuff, and it’s great to hear people playing music they are passionate about not some crap playlist of the same few boring tunes

I have a degree in Media Arts & Radio Broadcasting so I first got involved back then… I’ve also had some experience with Glastonbury Festival's official radio station, Radio Avalon.

What’s the format for Energise, is it all music or will we be hearing you and your guests talking a bit of nonsense along the way ?

Yeah, I imagine there'll be a fair amount of nonsense spoken although my shows don't usually have a great deal of speaking; I doubt if people really wanna hear me waffling on, so we try to let the music do the talking. We DO do station idents & shout outs & party news etc...

What does Fordy do when he's not DJing ?

Tickle cats, look after the Have-a-word Hotline, swim and try to enjoy life!

For those not in the know, what exactly is the ‘Have a Word’ Hotline ?

The Have-a-word Hotline is a voluntary organisation staffed by experts fully equipped to have-a-word with anyone who needs one. We campaign for such issues as Cancel Mondays and the Biscuit Alliance (for fairer redistribution of biscuits in the workplace)
