Logic Presents Interface @ The Scala

This was a fantastic night packed full of fast and furious dance, from the banging to the psy and etherial tracks. I was impressed with the lighting and decor and acoustics, but most of all by the fact that I didn't have to while away the forst hour or two of the night waiting for things to speed up. From start to finish this was a fast and furious night and highlights for me included sets by Shaf De Bass, Mat Style and the Nu Energy Collective.
The Nu-Energy Collective at work
In spite of arriving early to this event, and what looked like a short cue, this proved to be a very difficult place to get into if you were on the guest list. After nearly an hour of going absolutely no-where in the guest-list cue, I joined the ‘express-lane’ and paid full price. Ironically even people on the paying guest-list seemed to be less welcome than those waving £20 notes.
Inside the club however I felt far more welcome. Like most of the people I chatted to I got pretty lost trying to navigate the floors and red hall-ways of the Scala for the first time. For quite a while I could see people through the glass above me when I was in the main room, but short of levitating there didn’t seem to be a way to get there! The secret is that you have to go forwards to go back- ie to exits leading off the stage to access rooms above and behind you.
LAK:UK Dancers Jolene and DJ Shimmer
Everyone started out in Area 3 - The Redtrip versus Zoology where the cloak-room and the fist of several bars were. For some this also proved to be the chill out area for later in the evening, but the actual dance floor was small, a bit chilly and fairly bright and didn’t quite do justice to the acts that were on there. The pictures and patterns projected onto the ceiling were really cool and a few of us just stood there entranced whilst The Future Sound of Elvis was playing.
When I first made it through to Area One – Interface 5 around 11pm I could definitely 'Feel the Beat' as the track suggested. The acoustics of this space were brilliant, but it was the decorations, lighting, lasers and visuals that kept me dazzled whenever I went in there. At times I’d even forget to dance watching the pictures and light patterns projected onto big white cloth cylinders and projection screens. The theme was definitely Sci-Fi and conjured up loads of child-hood memories with Star Wars, Terminator, Matrix, Tron, Star Trek pictures as well as robots and surreal images I couldn’t identify. Loads of UV lights made sure that the spectacular costumes some people had chosen to wear stood out really well too.
The Blue, uh, Green Man
I have seen the Nu-Energy Collective perform before (at Logic A Christmas Tale) and so in a way I wasn’t totally surprised when, at around 2:10 the amazing green demon emerged from the box. Nor that he had a go at peeling off his own ‘skin’ whilst dancing like a mad-man, but I got freaked out when he started oozing red stuff out of his mouth!
Though I had trouble finding it at the start of the night, I ended up spending most of my time in Area 2 – The Return of the Dirty DJ’s. I walked in to Blow Da Roof and for most of the night that’s pretty much what happened I in Area 2. For me Shaf De Bass and Mat Style proved the favourites on the night and I really enjoyed hearing a lot of material that was completely new to me. I tried to have a chat with a couple of the Dirty DJ’s, but to had to settle for having a dance with them instead, and they proved on the night that behind or in front of the decks they knew what they were doing. To top it all off, the light projections in Area 2 involved coloured city-escapes including Sydney! A nice reminder of home.
Overall this was a great party in a really good space. I really liked that fact that each of the spaces stuck with dance, hard dance and trance. There was no waiting around twiddling your thumbs waiting for slow warm-up sets to be over and the real fun to start- nice! It wasn’t overcrowded and there were loads of fun people there and everyone I spoke to had a great time on the night!
