What happens when two of the midlands super clubs collide? The potential for something special or another way to rip off the dedicated followers of Passion? Well read on and make your own conclusions . . .
First impressions were not good. After contacting Crasher regarding guest lists and getting no response whatsoever I tried my luck with Passion. They, it seemed were being put under a lot of strain with the organisation of the event and wouldn’t give me a clear answer regarding guest lists. I finally got a resounding “no” on Saturday afternoon. This left me with very little time to organise a ticket but fortunately I was able to do so before the expected sell-out occurred. Was the bigger partner involved with the event making the rules? It seemed so. This was confirmed on arrival where it turned out that the only people on the guest list were those connected with Gatecrasher – it was very much going to be their event and they were clearly showing who was boss with increased security, banning of camera’s and inflated prices. Even a friend of mine who is the official Passion photographer was told what he was and wasn’t allowed to take pictures of. Apparently he was told not to take pictures of Cyber kids (strange when you consider Crasher is their home) people with glow sticks and anyone looking a bit messy. Are Crasher trying to change their image and become the next Ministry of Sound? Who knows?
Anyway, enough of my complaining, I had people to meet and things to see. After a Short time queuing (I got there nice and early) I was in and ready to go. I spent the next few minutes getting my bearings and the obligatory bottle of water, then it was off in search of friends. They were duly located so it was time to grab my spot on the elevated podium to watch the main room fill up. It was pretty cold in the club but it soon warmed up as it quickly began to fill. Passion’s own JFK warmed things up with a funkyish set and then made way for Matt Hardwick. The proceedings then got tranceier and he played some good tunes although his mixing left somewhat to be desired.
But if I stayed in my lofty position for much longer I was in danger of getting a nose bleed so it was time for a wander. A quick visit to the Red Room confirmed my suspicions that the music in here was going to have a harder edge and was certainly more to my taste. S.H.O.K.K. was filling in for the advertised Scott Project and has to be said played a blinder. Good hard driving trance, perfect for some serious stomping. The Red Room @ Passion has a low roof and a very intimate atmosphere, which lends itself to good DJ and clubber interaction and next up Signum, came to entertain. The crowd responded well and the pace was kept well upbeat with the obligatory breakdowns nicely interwoven. During my time in the Red Room trance super star and Passion favourite Armin Van Buuren was thrilling the now heaving mass in the main room, but that was not for me. The consensus of opinion seemed to be a positive one from the people I talked to, but having said that I’m sure that in his hands they’d think the birdie song was heaven sent!
Time for some R & R and a chill-out. As this was only my second time at The Emporium it was difficult to gauge how busy it was compared to normal nights but judging by the amount of complaining going on I guess it was pretty packed although it didn’t seem to bother me that much. The rest of the night seemed to pass ridiculously quickly, much of it spent talking with friends and wandering the venue. I had a final flourish in the Red Room to Richard Tulip, an unknown to me but I enjoyed myself none-the-less. Time was cracking on and I was dragged away kicking and screaming at about 5:30 am to an after party and for me a much needed cuppa.
Sorry for the lack of photo’s but that was out of my hands and thanks to everyone else who made it a good night, even in the face of Gatecrasher inspired adversity.

When I used to review nights, I went to Passion and they put me on the guestlist, plus 2 friends on the paying gueslist....
Maybe because they had more 'headline' DJs they had more costs to cover, so were more stingy with guestlist?!? Or maybe the big boys didnt wanna play ball..
SOunds like it was a good night tho - I saw JFK on friday night and he knocked my socks off - he was ace!!

There was no guestlist for anyone except those connected with Crasher. It's not Passion's fault, even Jason (JFK) had trouble getting people in and he's resident!
