Wildchild Preview... The Funky Headliners speak out! Reported by lady miss k / Submitted 07-10-03 20:49 What do the Trophy Twins, Gavin Herlihy, Guy Hornsby and Mac have in common? Quite a lot, in fact: they’re all DJs, they all make you want to shake your thang like the world’s about to end - and best of all, they’re all going to be spinning their funky tunage at Wildchild’s 1st Birthday on Friday October 24th at the Coronet. The Trophy Twins “We’re intrigued to see what the fuss is about!” says Trophy Twin Mark Foster, who along with Adam Ramsden, is at least partly responsible for putting funky house back on the map. “We first heard about Wildchild when Ben from GoodGreef mentioned a new night that was starting in the Capital, and that it was going from strength to strength. Then we met up with the Wildchild team in Ibiza this year.” Are they looking forward to playing? “We want a piece of the action,” Foster says, grinning. Unsurprisingly, of course, Wildchild wants a piece of them, too. Since the Goodgreef team discovered them two and a half years ago, they’ve had clubbers grooving everywhere from Gatecrasher and Tidy’s Magna 7 to Funkissential and Judgement Sundays in Ibiza – make no mistake about it, the Trophy Twins are Rocking. Mac A term that can also be applied to Guy and Mac. Unlike the Twins, who’ll be making their Wildchild debut in October, Guy and Mac have played an integral part since the early days, when Wildchild was still a spark just waiting to ignite… “I remember warming up for Alex P at the Fink in Camden in 2000,” says Mac, who’s first gig was in Birmingham for the mighty Miss MoneyPenny’s (he was so nervous he couldn’t put the needle on at the beginning of the record at first, managed nonetheless to play a blinding set - then fell into the dancefloor at the end!) “It was my 30th birthday, and even though there was only a couple of hundred people there, the atmosphere was brilliant. I remember Frankie (another regular guest DJ) running up to the front, ripping off his shirt and going mental to ‘Airscape’ – things like that are hard to forget!!” Guy Hornsby agrees. “All the Wildchild parties have been wicked, especially the last one at Heaven, they just seem to get better and better. Playing back-to-back with my twin brother at the first major Wildchild event last November at Heaven was amazing – and the atmosphere in the main room at the Coronet in May was phenomenal.” By all accounts, Guy’s had a pretty cool year. He kicked off 03 with a set at Tribalism at Ministry, and hasn’t really stopped since, with guest-slots everywhere from Cyberdog Sundissential and Parlez-Vous to Turnmills, Dogstar and Ibiza. And he’s loving every minute. “I do tend to get really carried away behind the decks - singing, dancing, and generally leaping all over the place!” he admits, laughing. Energy? He’s got it in spades – and he’s a regular entertainer, too, as well as, apparently, being a descendant of the pirates…(maybe that’s why the DJ booth is always surrounded by birds?) Still, it looks like he’s gonna have some stiff competition in October. “We’re not afraid of making fun of ourselves!” states Trophy Twin Foster, categorically. “We don’t like to take things too seriously – or lose sight of the fact that clubbing is really all about having a good party!!” Gavin Herlihy Gavin Herlihy agrees. Having been hooked on the dance scene since the tender age of 14 (when he was actually a rock kid: “I went to Reading Festival without money for a ticket, and couldn’t jump the fence. A mate suggested going to a nearby rave and I haven’t looked back since.”), Herlihy also writes for Mixmag, and was the man responsible for playing such a blinding set at Glastonbury that a naked middle aged hippy woman was driven to wank herself off in full view of everyone (not even stopping when someone threw the contents of a rubbish bin over her head) Herlihy prides himself on not playing ‘naff vocal house’ and being a fan of Guinness. But what does he think of Wildchild? “It’s one of the hottest new nights to take on the big clubs in the last few years,” he tells me. “Clubbers are looking for new nights to go to and new DJs to listen to and it’s good to see a club that’s pushing new talent.” Guyster He’s referring of course to the Superkids: Wildchild’s very own burgeoning stars of the future. On October 24th, they’ll all be going head to head with the Mixmag Future Heroes in a showdown that’s going to be more than a little fiery. On the Wildchild side, you’re going to have Wildchild residents Reece Elliot and Little Gem, plus regular guests Brisky and Simon Patterson. On the Future Heroes Side will be Guffy, Shan, Adam Sheridan, and, of course, the Trophy Twins. Which brings me back to the Funky Headliners, and back onto the night in question. What track do the Trophy Twins, Guy, Mac and Herlihy reckon will tear the roof off the Coronet when they get behind those decks? “For me, it’s got to be Spiller’s new tune, Solar, and David Guetta, “Just A Little More Love (the Wally Lopez remix),” says Guy, instantly. Both Mac and Foster refuse to budge – but you can easily forgive them: Mac is notorious for his ability to dig out unknown tunes that everyone goes wild for, and the Trophy Twins…well, the Trophy Twins’ reputation precedes them. Herlihy, on the other hand, is backing Cadence’s “Calabria” (“once the riff pops in it rips the arse off the dancefloor,” he says. But that’s not all: “You can also expect to hear a mixture of some of the hottest new tunes that I’ll be covering in future issues of Mixmag,” he adds, mysteriously. “Big basslines, shedloads of funk and some dark bits thrown in to spice things up. But it’s not all about new stuff.
