Chemistry - Review

There was definitely some chemistry in the air at the huge Frantic event last Saturday at Camden Palace. We witnessed the most exclusive, hardest, newest, hottest, fantastically talented bunch of DJ’s fuse together to create one massive explosion of energy – CHEMISTRY.
This was the last party of my clubbing career in London for 6 months (travelling round the world), but did we make up for it & have a blast of a night? Oh yeah. Although, I have to apologise for my vague synopsis of the night, but it was my leaving party and I wasn’t my most ‘sober’ self it has to be said. It got so bad that my fiancée had to take my pen & paper and try to record some of the events of the night because folks, looking back at my notepad today, my writing looks like a 2 year old who's scribbled all over the pages….oops.
We ventured into the main arena at around 11pm, where we were very excited to catch the last bit of Donna Birt’s set. She was getting us all warm & fuzzy for the stomp fest that was to follow while bangin out tunes like ‘Murder was the Bass’, excellent tune by DK8. Donna was in full swing and definitely kicking ass on the decks. This girl knows how to rock. She was on a roll as she spat out tunes like ‘Essence’ and ‘We come One’ by Nick Sentience. Another fantastic tune which she played, ‘Let the Games Begin’ by Ali Wilson. Donna Birt is such a fun and bubbly person this really shines through in her music, and that definitely turns the crowd ON.
James Lawson, need I say more?? This guy has got so much talent. He shared his set with Snake. When he belted out ‘Double Drop’ and another great tune ‘Rock 'n' Roll’ I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t care who saw me, I bounced for England. I’ve seen James play a while back at our friend’s party called DEMENTED, but he still pushed it to the max at Chemistry. Although Snake was not due to play I was really impressed with his uplifting, bouncy set. I saw him recently and found his set a bit too hard but I was definitely pulled in to it. I watched him from the side & bounced away to his tunes.
Paul Glazby aka ‘the Dark Destroyer’ was absolutely awesome. One of my first Glazby tunes I ever heard was ‘Hostile’ which I still love. He is totally mind-blowing. Even at home while reading I play his tune and find myself jumping around like a lunatic, the tube can be most embarrassing when I forget to stop bouncing…
By 1.45 I was exhausted so plonked myself upstairs and sat on the floor chatting to my buddies until I heard the cries for Cally & Juice. I got so excited, I ran down to the balconies to hear their awesome set. I am absolutely mad about these guys!!! I dig their style. It’s so exciting to see fresh/new talent in the hard house scene. Every time I passed a group of people I heard them talking about Cally & Juice. Although not everyone’s cup of tea, with their skilled scratching and breakbeats, they definitely had me on a roller coaster!! I loved their ‘Thriller’ remix, also Raw #18, but what really did it for me was the hard trance remix of ‘Insomnia’. These boys are full-on entertainers!
I must say I was having a wicked night and headed up to the Black & White bar to find it hadn’t opened on time. We couldn’t spend much time in the Black & White room though due to the fact that there is absolutely no air up there. I’m not sure how the DJ’s cope but its crazy. It’s such a pity cause there were very talented names playing there. I wanted to catch Paul Reeves & Tin Tin’s set but due to needing Oxygen, I had to leave as I felt very faint. Sorry guys, will definitely catch you at a more air-conditioned venue! My fiancé got to speak to the boys about their sets and said he found them really down to earth guys.
The rest of the night was very fluffy for me, sitting down chatting to lots of people. I’m afraid the music was a bit hard at that stage of the night. Although when Ian M. kicked out ‘Crazy Pills’ I saw my normally lovely calm fiancée doing a rather strange sort of dance with his buddy Tenacious Dee. I’m still not sure what they were doing. Ian M, Karim & Ed Real had lots of people going crazy with their deep hard hitting undertones with an extra helping of bass. I found the baseline too hard and dark, but I’ve been told by my male friends, ‘this is what hard house is all about darling, you girls just like the bouncy stuff’! It was too late for a fight. Anyway, my girlfriends needed French plaits in their hair so what could I do, it was an emergency….
I later went up to the B&W bar and caught a glimpse of it to see Tom Allen’s & Danny Gilligan’s B2B set which was great. These two boys definitely got a certain kind of energy. Next time will make sure I catch all of their set. Tom spun out ‘Plan B’ by Dave Lochrie & Paul Henry, I also went mental to ‘Deliverance’ by K90. That tune makes me go weak at the knees. In all the madness & noise I also heard ‘Access’ a KY Jelly Babies mix which had everyone bouncing for their life. Danny was busy keeping everyone even hotter with ‘InstruMENTAL’ by Phil Reynolds & Nick Sentience. I think by the show of hands being thrown in the air & the bodies in synchronised movement, this tune was definitely appreciated…
We had lots of friends out with us for our ‘leaving party’ so it was a mission to find them all but everyone had fun. Thanks to Calvin, Lorrie, Tenacious Dee, Braam, Moya, Frits, Paolo, and my wonderful fiancé Brad, for making it an unforgettable, fantastic fun filled night.
Also big up to the Frantic team who added a splash of Chemistry to the party!! See ya’ll in 6 months!
