Interview with S.H.O.K.K.

Reported by Bagel / Submitted 04-03-03 01:04

Hailing from Switzerland, S.H.O.K.K are DJs Reverb & Giotto. With a truly exceptional production record including the mighty "Isn't it all a little strange", "Folie a Deux" and "Altitude" to name a few, S.H.O.K.K are one of the few European producers who have successfully broken into the UK Hard Dance Scene. We caught up with S.H.O.K.K as they get ready for their London gig at Twisted on March 7th.

Daegal Brain: You're playing in London at Twisted on Friday march 7th. What sort of set can we expect to hear from you?

S.H.O.K.K.: Can't answer that question. I'll think about my set on the plane and decide when I'm in the club what I'm gonna to play. The main part is hard / uplifting trance of course and for sure I'll play some of our tunes and remixes. Come down to the Fridge and you'll know it Wink

DB: In January you played at club OXA in Zurich. How do the European clubs compare with what we have in the UK?

S.H.O.K.K.: I can just compare Swiss clubs with UK ones. We have don't have that many big clubs like you have them. We don't have the kind of Superclubs with 2,500 party people inside. I was shokked when I had my first gigs in the uk as the clubs here shut down at 2 or 3am. Here you can party the whole night till noon and that every weekend. Maybe that's the reason why I think that clubbers in the uk are more euphoric than here and that's why I love to play in the UK Smile

DB: In recent times you've become incredibly popular in the UK. Do you think that this is because your sound has appeal for both trance lovers and fans of harder sounds?

S.H.O.K.K.: Maybe it could be. We do not just bang as for example the hardstyle tunes do. We spend a lot of time on doing the beatz and mellows with a lot of different soundz and ways how they're arranged. We like to explore all the possibilities of the synths and fx. Some of them seem to be crap but if you find the right settings they make you a very special and cool sound.

DB: Your tune "Geilomatics" has just been released. Tell us a bit about this production.

S.H.O.K.K.: It's not an own production. It's a remix we did for this swiss project. We did that one last summer and it went really trancey with the melody played in the typical shokk style. But now we're going back to the darker and evil side with our new single Wink

DB: You've done a lot more remix work in comparison to productions under the S.H.O.K.K name on its own, why is this?

S.H.O.K.K.: It just happened. Maybe we did too many remixes in the past. Our plans for the future are to do more own productions and do less remixes.

DB: Last year your remixed Orion Too "Hope & Wait for Data records, Signum "Coming on Strong" for Tidy and Mat Silver & Tony Burt "Teardrops" for Above The Sky Records. Can we expect to see more of your work appearing on UK labels in 2003?

S.H.O.K.K.: Don't forget Altitude "Altitude" Wink which was very important to allow us entry into uk clubland. If there is an interesting track from the uk which we think we can do a proper mix of then for sure. But like I told you above, in the future we intend to do more of our own tracks instead of remixes.

DB: Your productions are held in high regard for their high quality. Typically how long do you spend working on a track?

S.H.O.K.K.: We just start to create a track and it's done when we're 100% happy with it. In the case of the remix for Cosmic Gate it was after a weekend, on our upcoming new single for example we've worked nearly a year now.

DB: Before you started work as producers, did you DJ?

S.H.O.K.K.: Marco (reverb) produced and I DJ'd before as a hobby. Then we teamed up and now I represent our project as the DJ 'cause Marco doesn't dj.

DB: Where else will you be playing this year?

S.H.O.K.K.: I hope a lot in the UK Smile I have confirmed dates with Gods Kitchen and hopefully will be at the Global Gathering festival in the Summer. I played a gig called Promise last week in Newcastle and that is an amazing place. Check out www.mostwanteduk.com to see my schedule.

There is a confirmed tour together with Flutlicht in Oz in July and other interesting overseas destinations are to be confirmed.

DB: Trance producers have a bit of a reputation for the amount of pseudonyms they work under. Do you produce under any other names?

S.H.O.K.K.: No. Marco and I just run the project S.H.O.K.K. at the moment. Marco runs other well known projects like Flutlicht, DJ Energy or Unmark to name only a few.

DB: If you are in a club and you see a lot of people going mental to one of your songs, what exactly do you feel / think?

S.H.O.K.K.: Sometimes it is like an orgasm Wink It's a fantastic feeling when you see people going mental on a track you did and they get happy.

DB: Will there one day be a S.H.O.K.K album?

S.H.O.K.K.: We have no plans yet but it's an interesting option to think about in the future.

DB: What does S.H.O.K.K stand for?

S.H.O.K.K.: S.H.O.K.K. isn't a short form for something. There is no particular meaning behind this name.

DB: Who do you see as being a rising star in 2003?

S.H.O.K.K.: I don't like this question. The clubbers and the dj's who buy the records decide who's gonna to be one.

DB: What are 3 tunes in your record box that you have been hammering in clubs at the moment?

S.H.O.K.K.: Mat Silver - Unique

Absolutely fantastic tune. Matt Silver's masterpiece. Bangin' and uplifting with an incredible euphoric breakdown.

DJ Scot Project - Rock!

Another awesome scot tune with that cool old style piano part. A lot of people want to compare Scot and Shokk but in my opinion we do not sound the same at all. Maybe we both do a kind of hard trance but for sure in different ways.

S.H.O.K.K. - ?

Our new single which has it's uk debut at the fridge! I've played a remix version in the uk before but this will be the first time it will be played in the uk.

DB: Where do you see the scene heading in 2003?

S.H.O.K.K.: For myself I hope that the Swiss scene will get more attention 'cause we have really nice clubs and events. But I'm sure that the UK (clubs) and the Netherlands (raves) will heading the scene again in 2003. Don't forget the overseas countries (like Australia or Japan) in wich the scenes are growing very fast.

DB: Finally, have you got any advice for the many aspiring producers out there?

S.H.O.K.K.: Make it the way you like it!

DB: Thanks for your time, we look forward to hearing you on action at Twisted!

S.H.O.K.K. appear at Twisted at The Fridge on Friday 8th March. For full details on this event click here.

Daegal, did you actually get to touch the man? Arghhh I wish I had been there! Glad to finally see an interview with DJ Giotto. S.H.O.K.K have remixed all my favorite tunes in 2002, along with Scot Project Wink so it's good to hear that he will be crossing borders more for gigs. As for an Australian tour with Scot Project, don't forget NEW ZEALAND!!! Big grin
