Japanese star Energy Dai visits the UK for a whirlwind tour of the country this week, amongst other highlights taking in the Frantic Valentines Ball this Saturday. HarderFaster had a quick fire Q&A session with him before he hopped on the long haul flight over here.
HarderFaster: Yoji Biomehanika is probably the best known Japanese DJ in the UK - is the kind of style he plays representative of the material you'll hear played in clubs in Japan?
Energy Dai: I have know Yoji for about 7 years, since he was playing in small underground parties only. Now Yoji is harder and more extreme than a lot of Japanese music; his popularity stems partly from his "character" and his emphasis on performance; although i like some of the stuff that he plays, I think his emphasis is more about "Yoji" (maybe as a minor celebrity) in the dance scene than just a musician.
HF: We don't seem to get UK releases of Japanese artist tracks, other than the afore-mentioned Yoji - is there much material being produced in Japan or is a lot of it sourced from Europe and elsewhere.
ED: In Japan there is a large amount of imported music from all over the world- more so than the UK, and we get dutch and german etc imports as much, or more than UK ones. There is not the same engineer culture in Japan as the UK so the producers who have the studios tend to be DJ's; Japan is still a little way behind the UK in production culture.
HF: Have you played in the UK before? Either way, how do you think the Japanese scene compares to the scene in the UK?
ED: Yes, I have played in Inside Out in Scotland with Fergie and Jules, which was great, and at The Fridge for Escape from Samsara, at Heaven and Torture Garden in Brighton... The Japanese scene is smaller than the UK scene; there are less customers; but the clubs are more high tech. My resident event, World Love, brings in customers from all across Osaka, and its sweaty intense feeling is, I hope, a bit like the UK.
HF: Describe for us the kind of set we can expect you to play at the Frantic Valentines Ball.
ED: Hard House, Hard Techno Breaks and Hard Trance..
HF: What recommendations do you have for UK clubbers abroad to visit clubs in Japan? We've heard about some amazingly high tech clubs over there...
ED: It think that they should check out Joule in Osaka, where my resident party World Love is every first weekend of the month and if in Tokyo, Veflarre, Liquid Rooms and Womb.
