Interview with Anne Savage Reported by tom / Submitted 22-01-03 21:54 Anne Savage is one of the biggest stars of the hard house scene. As one half of the original Tidy Girls with Lisa Lashes she epitomises the banging hard house sound and vibe of the mighty Tidy Trax. She's rocked dancefloors at all four corners of the globe, from New Zealand, Toronto, Greece, Japan, Australia and all the way back to the UK where she plays regularly for Slinky, Golden, Storm, Progress and Sundissential. Next weekend she plays with Lisa Lashes at Utopia at the Fridge: read on for our Q&A session with her... HarderFaster: Anne, you must be pretty pleased with your no.27 position in the Top 100 DJs poll making you the number 2 female DJ in the world...did that result mean a lot to you? Anne Savage: It did actually - you try and kid yourself its not important, but if I drop a few places this year I'll be disappointed. HF: In terms of the tracks being produced, hard house definately seems to be out of favour at the moment....has this forced you to change your style or are you still finding enough banging material to play out? AS: Recently I have noticed that I'm doing a lot more rooting around to find tracks that tickle my fancy. It's finding those tracks that are a little bit techier, but still sound good in a hard club that are few and far between. I'm not really changing my style, it will always be banging. HF: Your playing at Frantic's Utopia event which will be featuring yourself and Lisa playing on the bill togther for the first time in London, do you have anything special worked out for this clash of the Tidy Girls? AS: Yes Ive worked on a new dance routine that I'm very excited about Seriously though I'll just be doing what I do, go with the flow you know? I'm working on a new compilation album so I've loads of new stuff (he he). HF: How would you describe the difference between your and Lisa Lashes' styles at the moment? AS: We played back to back recently and it flowed better than ever. It also depends on where I'm playing, I do a lot of different venues to Lisa where I get away with a techier set. HF: If you had to choose someone who would you most like to go back to back with? AS: Carl Cox. HF: A recent magazines statistic suggested that 1 in 7 men were thinking about buying decks, the same proportion as were thinking about buying scaletrix sets. Why do you think there's been this huge upsurge in people wanting to become DJs? AS: It seems to be very trendy for people to have decks at home. They probably just fancied a go. I imagine most of them get advertised in LOOT! 12 months later. I'm thinking about getting an electric guitar for a laugh. HF: On that note, were you any good at scalextrix ? perhaps there's a link AS: I remember trying to get the controls off my (2) sisters and (4) brothers without much luck. My eldest sister still has it I think. HF: What do you think makes the difference between a superstar DJ and your average club resident. Do you think its down to a difference in ability/skill or is it about how well they are promoted? AS: All the press in the world won't make you a good DJ. I like to think that the public will always decide for themselves who's good and who's paid a lot for PR. There's hundreds of other DJ's out there who people can go and see so you have to have something special if you pull in a crowd. Some residents are heroes themselves. I don't think you need press to become a star, the best way to be a successful DJ for a long time is for you to build up your following by clubbers hearing about you word of mouth and hearing your music first hand. HF: Is there any advice that you'd give out to a DJ starting out right now? AS: With the demise of superclubs there are more big DJ's than ever fighting for the same slot in a club. There's just not as many gigs around and I would strongly advise against quitting your day job in the present climate. However if you know you can knock the spots off the best, maybe start your own low key night and get a following that way. HF: Where do you see things heading musically in 2003? Is hard house due for a resurgence? AS: I believe people are always going to want to hear hard music, in whichever form. I dont think techno will be as big as all the DJ's want it to be (including me!) but definitely have some influence on the stuff thats being made. HF: The huge superclubs seem to be falling out of favour at the moment with Cream closing and Gatecrasher going monthly...given your perspective near the top of the world DJ hierachy where do you see the scene heading in the next year or so? AS: Hopefully it will weed out the tourist clubbers and clubs will be full of music lovers. After all the best atmospheres I can remember were when the scene was just starting out as underground. HF: What's your view on the up and coming talents on the DJing and production side of things? AS: I think its important for record companies to listen to new and younger talent because they are the future of the scene, with inside info on what young people actually are into. Tidy are good at this and whisked Paul Maddox and Guyver out of their bedrooms and into the spotlight. Not daft. HF: Your last outing in London was for Heat NYE...how was that experience for you? AS: I got there at four thirty in the morning and it was rammed to the rafters and stayed that way till close at six. Awesome. HF: Whats been your most enjoyable set and where? AS: There's been so many it would be unfair to pick one fave. The Millenium Dome was the biggest crowd Ive ever played to, or maybe the first time I got to fill in the 'big man's shoes at Angels in Burnley, my first residency in the UK around 1994. HF: Strangest thing a fans done? AS: Got a tattoo of my signature done on his back! The first time I saw it he lifted his shirt up in the middle of a mix and I nearly dropped the mix! HF: What do you have planned for the production side of things? AS: All sorts. I have plans to do some techno and breakbeat. HF: What are your plans for 2003? AS: Production wise as above. I have many special projects, which i can't mention because I don't want to jinx them. I have my mix album coming out 'Music For The Harder Generation' and the launch of my website in mid-feb. I am also doing a monthly column on www.digitaldance.com, where I will be talking about anything and everything. My chart will also be up there and my gig list. HF: We've heard you're a bike fan... what's your favourite bike? AS: A Triumph, a great British brand HF: Finally Anne, what are your top 3 tracks of all time? AS: Because my memory is shot, it changes everytime I go to my lock up (where I keep my records) to find new samples. I discover a 'new'fave record everytime, much to the amusement of my boyfriend, Jay.
