Supernova: Frantic vs Heat

The whole thing is based on respect. Respect for the music, respect for the DJ, respect for the crowd and respect for one another. Look around yourself, we’ve got every kind of people here and I’m not talking fucking attitude. It’s about music...
I must have missed the sign outside the Fridge that stated ‘No egos beyond this point’ - well how else can you explain what lay inside; a mashed-up mixture of all the happiest, bounciest, barmiest clubbers in town  You see, tonight two of the biggest promoters in Hard Dance, Frantic and Heat, have fused together for the Big Bang of clubbing nights out. Be assured and prepared all ye who enter; this night is set to go off like a firecracker on 5HTP.
We arrive at just gone 10 and already the outside of the Fridge is chock-a-block with psyched-up stompers all set for a night of explosive action. With so many people to sort out it was obviously going to take a while to get in, so by the time we’d made it through the doors and checked all our stuff into the cloakroom as well, we’d just missed Simon Rutherford’s set  But judging by the comments from the early bird high-flyers I spoke to it was a real stormer, less of a warm-up and more of a meltdown, getting everyone so far into their stride they would have made Linford Christie feel insecure 
On the dance floor and ready to go in time for the start of Spencer Freeland and Grant Thomson’s B2B set, it’s clear that everyone involved is all set for a night of memorable mashed-up mayhem. The club has only been open for an hour but already the atmosphere inside is so intense it’s practically tangible, as the dance floor teems with lights, cameras and action like it’s the end of the night, if not the world A quick check of the club’s layout reveals where the styles of the two clubs meet; the decoration is dark and sultry in the typical Heat fashion but the ballistic disco lights and lasers are Frantic through and through. Add to that a pounding sound system and an interstellar line-up of first class DJ’s and we do, indeed, have lift off...
So it goes without saying that the blasting beats of the Freeland/Thomson set are received by everyone in the place like a long-lost friend. Open arms stretch out across the room as the music embraces us all, while up on stage the World-Champion Glowstick Jugglers provide a little light entertainment, neatly summing up the overall mood of the night; sling your seriousness out the door and just let go The tracks are coming thick and fast now, a pumping mix of Hard House and Hard Trance that bangs on the brain like a schizophrenic woodpecker. By the time 12.30 rolls around everybody’s so far into the music they’d need an A-Z to find their way out again
But with Nick Sentience on next there’s slim chance of that happening and if you thought you were working hard already, you ain’t felt nothing yet. What followed was a set that made my legs burn so badly that spontaneous human combustion looked like a serious possibility. The purest Hard Trance slamming out of the speakers through a sequence of tracks so uplifting they almost gave me vertigo; tunes such as Ilogik’s latest on Elasticman and EJ Doubell’s CoreStar, perfect examples of how pounding and dirty Hard Trance should be.
Now I hope you’re all sitting down because what follows is truly shocking and those of a nervous disposition may want to have a cup of something strong close to hand. For on this night at 1am, half way through Nick Sentience’s set, the miraculous occurred... a pre-arranged HarderFaster meet-up ACTUALLY HAPPENED!! Hehehe, ok so maybe stranger things have happened at sea (in fact a hell-of-a-lot stranger things have happened in raves before) but it was really kinda cool to see a corner of the Fridge turn into a HarderFaster social club for a while, and it was very cool to meet a load of you and put names to faces So a big hi  to all who made it and looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
Midway through the night and it’s Marc French’s turn to belt out a superlative set of pure, pumping beats to drive our feet. No disappointments here as the list of thumping tracks piles up (Danial Ro’s ultra-bouncy Deeper, DJ Meister’s equally excellent Can You Feel It both hitting the spot like aural sledgehammers, not to mention the all-defining It’s About Music and the euphoric end-of-set track that is Revolution) and people’s heads balance precariously on ear-to-ear cheek-splitting smiles. The inside of the Fridge now looks more like a KP factory – wall-to-wall nuts – and although the dance floor is rammed in like a certain fishy snack, I’ve gotta say these are the happiest sardines I’ve ever seen!
It’s 5am, it’s the penultimate set of the night, and this can only mean 1 thing; Paul Glazby. The crowd are ready for this – after the ecstatic breakdowns of BK’s signature track that marked the end of Marc French’s set they’ve never been more ready for anything in their lives. Glazby takes his place in the DJ box and the whole room explodes in a blaze of light, sound and emotion. You want Hard House? This was a set so hard if you hooked a chain up to it you could’ve levelled buildings with it. Yamamba, Clean and Heavy, Motherfucker – this wasn’t the kind of set that flirted with your finer sentiments or took fairy-steps up and down your spine, this was the kind of set that headed straight for the most primal part of you and gave it a good kicking. I guess we’ve established by now that this was a superior set in a superior night but when Beautiful was dropped my whole being went into orbit. My favourite track ever (think I may have mentioned this to 1 or 2 people over the course of the night) the breakdowns in this tune tore the roof down and ripped the floor apart, and they weren’t any gentler to the thousand-strong mass of mangled stompers caught between the 2. It’s been a while since I’ve caught one of Paul Glazby’s sets but there’s no doubting that it was well worth the wait. Outstanding.
The last hour and final set goes to Phil Reynolds and he’s certainly more than capable of keeping up the flow of braincell-busting beats. Unfortunately, this is where the night turns decidedly sour. Nothing to do with the music, thankfully, (which was indispensably driving) but the one big calamity of the night: the cloakroom. Mention this word to anyone who was there Saturday night and you’re more than likely to be answered by a desolate groan. Like a lot of people I thought I’d grab my stuff early so I could beat the masses and catch the best of Phil’s set. As soon as I got up to the balcony it was obvious this wasn’t gonna be the case; the queue was long and believe me, it was bad... I’ve been in some slow lines in my life but this cloakroom queue was absolutely stationary. I can’t say for certain what caused it – as usual there are various rumours circulating, that there was only 1 person manning the cloakroom, that a lot of people had lost their tickets and were trying to find their stuff through a process of elimination, that the cloakroom people had decided to make new coats for us instead – but what I do know is that it was a total one-off. I’ve been to Frantic nights before at the Fridge that were easily equally as crowded yet I’ve never experienced anything quite like that. It’s such a shame because it spoiled what was otherwise a first-rate night
(Major, major thanks though have to go to Phil Reynolds for playing such a superb set and keeping us all going, I only wish I’d had the chance to enjoy it properly. Made all the difference for those of us who were waiting – cheers!)
Ok, so the night certainly didn’t end in the way it should but unfortunate cloakroom dramas aside, what can you say about Supernova...?

Wise words well said! A well-earned thank you to all involved who helped deliver what was, in total, an exceptional and memorable night’s clubbing. The DJ’s were all on top form, the visuals, as ever, were coma-inducingly dazzling, the banging tracks reached the places other styles dare not to tread and of course all you nutters out there brought with you the liveliest vibe in recent clubbing history. Special thanks though go to Frantic’s own Robyn, as it’s about time this lady got the appreciation she deserves – without her hard work, organisation and ever-friendly and helpful attitude I doubt these nights would run anything like as smoothly. Think anyone who’s met her will agree
Supernova: a truly out-of-this-world event, exploding like a stomper across the stars...

About the coats, I didn't get out of the Fridge till 7.15 and its not the 1st time......

Top review, absolutely spot on! The wait for the coats was tragic, but it happens. Took a mate who wasn't really into Hard House, and she has been converted!
