Match Made In Heaven - Review Reported by tom / Submitted 02-01-02 14:45 Now normally my preference on the first morning of the year is to lie in bed clutching my head, shaking like a sh*tting dog and scrabbling desperately for Paracetamol, Anadin, Nurofen, in fact just about anything white and pill-shaped to ease the terrible pain. This time things were going to be different... what finer innovation has there been in clubbing than day-clubs (not a spelling mistake ) and what better day to do it on than New Year's Day ? Fevah have turned Match Made in Heaven into one of the biggest events on the underground London clubbing scene and taking a look at the DJ lineup on the flyer it's not hard to see why they've succeeded where others have failed. I love Heaven as a venue, 4 rooms all with separate sound systems so you'll struggle to find a time when at least one DJ's set won't do it for you (though I'm 'reliably ' informed that the Organ Donors track 'In Power' was played simultaneously in all four rooms at one point ) One thing about Heaven though: I'm sorry, but they really need to start putting maps up in clubs with those little 'you are here' signs stuck on them. I admit I have this sort of a directional dyslexia thing (except when in a car where as a male I have an infallible, almost mystical, sense of direction and location ). I've been to the Fridge about 30 times now and I still always go in through the wrong door trying to find the cloakroom, it's the same old sad story at Heaven and don't even get me started on the Academy - I've spent whole weeks in there searching for the entrance to the bar overlooking the main arena. So, apologies to those DJs playing in the Dakota Bar, someday I'll stumble in there trailing my white piece of string so I can find my way back but it wasn't to be this time. So, we kicked things off in the Star Bar where the sound system which was fairly quiet when we turned up to hear Grant Thomson's set, but after about 10 minutes the whole place underwent a huge transition - the sound system cranked up louder, people started pouring in and Grant started pushing out some legendary tracks. Think the first one that sent the dancefloor raging was Voltswagen's 'No Sleep', better known as 'Everything... starts... with an E' to us singalong clubbers (promoters take note: karaoke clubbing - it has to happen someday soon ). First choon of the New Year bring it on ! We had to tear ourselves away at 3:55 'cos there's no way we were going to miss the start of K90's live set in the main room. I think my favourite part in any K90 set is when he first starts off... the sound systems gone quiet and everyone's packed into the biggest room in the club and waiting for him to start the noise. On the sets I've heard recently he's been cueing off with a mix of the Warp Brother's 'Blast the Speakers' which I love and then working through his own back catalogue which is just totally unfairly rammed with classic tracks. Slipping in 'Colours 2001', 'Get a Rush' (first time this year ) and the highlight for me at the moment, his mix of Praga Khan's 'Injected with a Poison' ('are you listening to me' - see I would be brilliant singing along at karaoke on that one as well). Ah yes, first time in 2002 for that 'Oh MY GOD this is f*cking brilliant !!!' feeling followed shortly by 'was that an hour's set ? Felt like about 5 minutes worth to me' - ah well, time flies hey ?'. First time I'd heard Ian M (not sure how I'd managed to miss him in the past) who was up to the decks next. To increase the challenge for the DJs, Fevah had kindly mounted the onstage decks on what looked like a swing, it must have made it well hard to cue up the tracks. What next boys, put blindfolds on them and tie their hands behind their backs ?? Whatever, it didn't seem to be having any effect on Ian's set which took off from where K90 had finished and kept things thrashing along. Next up to the aerial DJ box Phil Reynolds reeled off one of his trademark hard uplifting trance sets which was just all good. We're so looking forward to seeing what he can throw our way at Timeless III next week, lots to live up to from Timeless II The closing hour we spent flitting back and forth between the main room and the bedroom, keen to hear both Matt Clarke's final set and hear a couple of the up and coming DJs (fortunately for them on stationery decks) Kate Rankin and Simon Field kicking out the tunes in the Soundshaft. Matt's set was one of the best I've heard him play ever I think (I'd even go as far as to say it was his best this year ) and it kept all those clubbers locked into the main room while the sensible remnents of their brain were reminding them that they'd be back at work in less than 12 hours time and hadn't they better get some goddamn sleep ? It's a sign of the quality of Kate and Simon's sets that we kept on coming back to the 'shaft for more despite having to drag ourselves away from Matt's work... human cloning: after clubbing karaoke it will be the next big thing. If they do it next year without a doubt we'll be there; if you fancy a glimpse of Heaven before then the next MMIH is on 31st March.
