Heat - Review Reported by TearZ / Submitted 04-12-01 10:38 I’d heard good things about the previous Heat events and after all, who could resist the lure of serious clubbing on a Saturday afternoon? A spot of weekend window-shopping? Perhaps watching the horseracing on Channel 4? Not for me thanks, let’s leave that to normal people With a choice of fighting through the hordes of Christmas shoppers or partaking of some hard house lunacy… there was only going to be one winner. Especially when taking into account a superb line-up of Jamie Duncan, Steve Blake, Marc French and the mighty Phil Reynolds – not forgetting new talent Ragdoll and Des 112. Eight hours of the best in hard house and trance was there for the taking and harderfaster gladly obliged! I arrived at the Rock (not more than a few metres from Embankment tube) at about 4pm and was swiftly allowed in by the friendly door-staff. There was no queue to speak of, so I was wondering how busy it was actually going to be when I got inside. I needn’t have worried, as soon as I got my first glimpse of the dance-floor it was obvious there had been a steady stream of punters since the club opened at 2pm… the place was rammed! First off though, just a little about the venue. I’d never been to the Rock before, as far as I’m aware it is new to the world of hard dance, so I wasn’t sure to expect. I was definitely in for a pleasant surprise – the venue is obviously pretty new and as such is nice and clean, with good facilities. I reckon the capacity of the club must be around 400. The layout is on several levels – on the second floor is small chill-out room with windows overlooking the carnage on the dance-floor. Down another level brings you right into the action and bam! Heat was certainly an appropriate name! The dance-floor was going-off already, but I wanted to explore some more first. Through from the dance-floor are a large number of comfy sofas to relax and chat - should you so desire. Finally, the bar and another dance-area can be found on the lowest level. The DJ booth itself is located high above the dance-floor, allowing plenty of crowd to DJ interaction, for those hands-in-the-air ‘tune!’ moments! All credit to the organisers too; they certainly put plenty of effort into the décor… Heat banners, digital screens and faux flames were particularly nice touches. Jamie Duncan, of Solid Sunday fame, was in charge of the action when I rocked up… providing a perfect start - bouncy hard house. Now, when I’m locked onto the vibe I tend not to notice the DJs changing over… if the music’s great then it all flows over me and I can’t stop dancing. This was certainly the case at Heat; the music was pumping and the tunes were dropping hard and fast. Current favourites like ‘Khemical Imbalance’, ‘Warehouse’ and ‘House of Happy’ (think this track is called 'Beyond Boundaries' - Ed) were met with absolute hysteria (feel the floor shake!) Even K90’s ‘Deliverance’ made an appearance, causing me to stampede from the bar to the dance-floor! Sorry to anyone I stood on The venue had been quite brightly lit for the duration, but at around 8pm the lights went down… having the effect of bringing me up! I guess I must be nocturnal! (I know you're nocturnal - Ed) This was another nice little touch and was greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance. I do have one gripe however - and I know this is a matter of opinion – although the crowd was great, it was absolutely packed on the dance-floor, making it difficult to dance properly without crunching someone else and vice versa. Perhaps a few less people for the next Heat would be an idea? Anyway, Phil Reynolds rounded-off proceedings as we’ve all come to expect, combining all the best elements of hard dance… fast and furious, but uplifting. His set was fresh, with plenty of the latest sounds and classic anthems. The beauty of it all was that, at 10 o’clock when the master lifted the needle and the music ceased, everyone knew this was just the beginning… Pendragon and Logic among others were big nights for those needing to go on. Nice one Heat, what an appetiser! See you at the next one.
