Fahrenhite's 3rd Birthday - Review Reported by billy boy / Submitted 29-10-01 22:42 Another party and another awesome caning night of hard and fast dance music – expectations were very high and I’m pleased to say that somehow the team at Fahrenhite managed to exceed them. Their third birthday party was held at Mass in SW9 and delivered non-stop inspiring hard dance music from the first tune we heard until the last one I can remember some time after 5am (adjusted time!). Need I say more? Well, OK then – here’s a shot at describing what went down… Being well keen for it and also meeting a large posse of friends without tickets in the queue, we arrived at the highly enthusiastic time of about 9pm. Allegedly, this was the time the club was due to open, however as it turned out, even though the queue was short, we ended up standing about for 40 minutes or so before they let us loose on the dance floor… Once inside, we stuck our heads into the main room briefly, the music playing was surprisingly mellow (for Fahrenhite) trance and there wasn’t much of a crowd yet – though full marks for the visuals – not brilliant lighting but the place was well done up for the party. So we headed across to the smaller room, which appeared to be the harder room and Simon Field already had the 20 or so party-goers jumping around with his uplifting hard house. We hadn’t heard this bloke play before but he definitely knows what he’s doing – this was no mellow warm-up set – the second track he laid on upon our arrival was The Beginning and it was pretty much one crowd-pleaser after another from there on in – WOOF! Roosta was taking us on a bit of a trip down hard house memory lane (I think Music is Moving was his second track) and proceeded to bang out one anthem after another – clearly this was a birthday party they intended to celebrate by laying it on thick and fast. We approved. Even though things were going damned well in the back room – somehow I got convinced to check out the main room a couple of times during those early hours. What was in store for us there was not what we’d come to expect from a hard dance Fahrenhite do – Paul D and then Raymondo were warming up the crowd but you could have been forgiven for thinking you had wandered into The Gallery at Turnmills or The Cross with the trance numbers they were dishing up. They were steadily winding up the crowd, however, and Raymondo really started cranking it before midnight prior to Steve Blake & Owen B hitting the decks. Now, my brother Tom (harderfaster) had been winding me up about this set for weeks. These blokes played B2B at the Fevah Bank Holiday Extravaganza @ Astoria in August and Tom reckons it’s one of the best sets he’s ever heard (I haven’t heard it yet, but Danceportal recorded it, so you can check it out at www.danceportal.co.uk/djarchive/dj_owenb.htm - when they get the site kicking over again that is… ). Now Tom parties a lot (CT: Nooooo, say it isn’t true !) so that was a pretty tall claim and I can confirm that I was revving to go once Mr Blake stepped behind the decks. What followed was an exhibition of B2B DJing that laid any doubts I had about the value of B2B to rest. This was three hours of non-stop party tunes of the most uplifting variety. To be honest, the most surprising thing for me initially was the track selection. With the utmost respect much of the kind of music these guys played is commonly known as “girly trance” amongst the hard house / trance posse. I almost felt a bit embarrassed dancing to some of the tunes at first – a lot of this wasn’t hard trance it was just out and out trance! It was absolutely hilarious watching some of the hard house boys jackhammering their way through the floor to the big trance anthems! But the question is – did it go down well??? Did it ever! The place was going ballistic and I well and truly lost my plot on the dance floor somewhere along the way… Now during this stage of the night is where the problems really started – friends surged over from the back room to drag us over to hear Skol, where he was turning out some of his finest work. The only problem is, just as we got motivated to head across, they realised that though the music wasn’t as hard as expected in the main room it was causing havoc nonetheless. This issue persisted pretty much until the end of the night – I mean, where are you supposed to go when you’ve got Phil Reynolds followed by Matt Clarke in one room and Pants & Corset followed by Riksta & Steve Ryan in the other? Check out the playlist below and you’ll get the picture… Anyway, back to the story! So, Steve & Owen were tearing up the main dance floor – the place was going nuts and we were thrashing ourselves to within an inch or so of our lives. Midway through the set, we spotted Mr Reynolds mingling with the crowd – and it is always nice to see the top DJs chatting with the revellers and having a bit of a dance. All of a sudden though I had a painful thought… Phil has a habit of picking up the party wherever it’s at and taking it up another level. I realised we were going to have to dig deep for this one – and there was going to be serious pain involved at the end of it all… Sure enough, Phil Reynolds stepped up to the wheels of steel, the crowd whooped and whistled, and from the first tune it was pandemonium. Needless to say, the party took on a harder edge as he served up a strict diet of fast banging trance we love. To be fair though, I did feel that Steve & Owen had done such a good job on us – and for three hours! – that there wasn’t really another level for Phil to take it up to… The rest of the night is a bit hazy but suffice to say that Matt Clarke was grinning his head off behind the decks and just picked up where Phil left off. Riksta & Steve Ryan were still pounding it out in the back room, which is where I ended up seeing out the night – it was such an anthem fest that I'm sure I heard various tunes repeated at least four or five times from room to room... I have to confess (a bit guiltily) that by just after 5 (read 6 for adjusted time – no honest!) I’d given all I had to give. I was so caned that I slipped out quietly about 15 minutes before the end. All that remains to be said is that that was one hell of a party and I don’t know if I ever need to go partying again….. …not until next weekend that is – COME ON!!!
